Red carpets can be quite challenging, especially when the gown features a train. On Tuesday night, London’s Leicester Square witnessed a minor mishap involving the Princess of Wales, and her charming response has become the highlight of the evening.

The event was the world premiere of Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’, held at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square. This screening also served as this year’s Royal Film Performance, organized by the Film and TV Charity, with proceeds benefiting the cause. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the satirical black comedy stars Cruise as oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, who races against time to prove he can save humanity from the disaster he caused.

Kate arrived alongside Prince William, stunning in a floor-length purple Jenny Packham dress that featured a train. Unfortunately, as they made their way in with Marcus Ryder, chief executive of the Film and TV Charity, and chair Claire Tavernier, Tavernier accidentally stepped on the gown after they exited the escalator, causing Kate to momentarily lose her balance.

A video shared by The Royal Family Channel captures just how close it was. Thankfully, Kate didn’t fall, and Tavernier quickly stepped back, raising her hand in apology. The princess recovered gracefully and burst into laughter.

As Tavernier continued to apologize, Kate reportedly offered her an understanding smile, reassuring her as they continued walking. Fans on X praised her composure, with one remarking on how perfectly she handled the situation and another noting her reaction was both genuine and kind.

The gown also attracted attention for its accessories. Kate paired it with Princess Diana’s earrings and the Queen Mother’s amethyst sautoir necklace, a stunning piece featuring pearls, diamonds, and amethysts that Queen Alexandra gifted to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. Prince William complemented her look with a black velvet jacket.

Despite the mishap, the atmosphere remained joyful. Cruise personally assisted Kate down the steps to the cinema, greeting her with kisses on both cheeks. The group engaged in conversation and laughter, extending their time together beyond the planned schedule, with Ryder humorously noting that his only task was to introduce the royals before Cruise beat him to it.

The evening also marked a reunion, as the couple had previously attended the UK premiere of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ in May 2022. Cruise expressed his gratitude from the stage, stating, per Variety, “we love them and we really appreciate what they do for the arts.”

Kate has had a remarkable year in fashion, recently securing the No. 1 spot on the 2026 best-dressed list. The plum Jenny Packham gown only enhances her streak, even if it momentarily tested her balance.

‘Digger’ is set to hit screens internationally on September 30 and in North America on October 2. Moments like this ensure the premiere will be remembered for reasons beyond just the film.
