‘Street Fighter’ Pre-Sales Show Weakness, Raising Concerns of Box Office Bomb
Video game adaptations have had a mixed history at the box office, with each new fighting-game movie carrying the burden of past failures. Paramount’s upcoming reboot of ‘Street Fighter’ arrives with this legacy in mind, as both the 1994 film featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raúl Juliá and 2009’s ‘Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li’ struggled to resonate with audiences.
This latest iteration has faced its own challenges, initially slated for a March 2026 release at Sony before moving to Paramount and settling into its current October slot. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, who took over after Danny and Michael Philippou left the project in 2024, the film aims to appeal to fans with a PG-13 rating and a vibrant 1990s ensemble, hoping to succeed where previous adaptations fell short.
However, the film’s pre-sale tracking has not met expectations. Early projections indicate that ‘Street Fighter’ may open stronger than ‘Masters of the Universe,’ which debuted at $29.3 million, but weaker than ‘Mortal Kombat II,’ which opened at $38.5 million. Current estimates suggest a domestic debut between $30 million and $37 million.
These underwhelming pre-sale figures come amid a decline in audience awareness metrics. According to tracking from The Quorum, which surveys moviegoers on awareness and interest biweekly, ‘Street Fighter’ has dropped to 39 percent awareness, down 7 points, and 39 percent interest, down 5 points, leading up to its release. Notably, no other film on the chart lost as much ground in either category during the same timeframe, and those figures closely mirror ‘Masters of the Universe’ before it opened to $29.3 million and ultimately grossed around $113 million worldwide against a production budget reportedly exceeding $170 million.

Paramount and Legendary are not relying solely on word of mouth for the film’s success. They are organizing a “Bonus Round” fan event on October 15, the evening before the release, featuring exclusive IMAX and premium format screenings with early showtimes starting at 2:00 PM. Each ticket holder will receive a collector’s art print as an additional incentive.
‘Street Fighter’ features a cast that combines traditional Hollywood actors with stars from wrestling and music, including Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. David Dastmalchian plays the villain M. Bison, while Jason Momoa, Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, 50 Cent, and Orville Peck portray Blanka, Akuma, Guile, Balrog, and Vega, respectively.
Set in 1993, the narrative follows Ryu and Ken as they are recruited by Chun-Li to participate in the World Warrior Tournament, only to uncover a conspiracy involving Bison. The film is set to release in IMAX and RealD 3D on October 16, giving Paramount just under three weeks to boost awareness before opening weekend.

Whether the impressive cast and last-minute promotional efforts can significantly alter the film’s trajectory remains uncertain, especially with recent comparisons to ‘Mortal Kombat II’ still fresh in the minds of box office trackers. For a studio hoping ‘Street Fighter’ will ignite its box office performance in the latter half of the year, the early figures suggest a more challenging battle than anticipated.
