Few actresses have made a significant impact on both the Broadway stage and modern blockbusters like Rosemary Harris. Her illustrious career began in 1948, long before superhero franchises took over the box office, establishing her as a celebrated figure in classical theater.

Harris’s extensive résumé led her to Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man‘ trilogy, where she portrayed Aunt May alongside Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker from 2002 to 2007. Raimi notably cast her without a screen test, and her performance has become the definitive interpretation of the character for many fans over the years.

Recently, Harris was honored for reaching an incredible milestone. The English actress turned 99 on September 19, and her daughter, actress Jennifer Ehle, shared heartwarming photos of Harris celebrating the occasion with a birthday breakfast, complete with a candle and surrounded by family.

Harris’s contributions extend far beyond her superhero legacy. Throughout her career, she has received a Tony Award for ‘The Lion in Winter’ in 1966, an Emmy for her role in ‘Notorious Woman’ in 1976, and a Golden Globe in 1978, along with an Academy Award nomination for ‘Tom & Viv’ in 1995. In 2019, she was honored with a special Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, solidifying her status as one of the most respected figures in theater.

What made her portrayal of Aunt May particularly memorable was her dedication to the role’s physicality, even performing some of her own stunts in ‘Spider-Man 2’ at the age of 75. Reflecting on her collaboration with Raimi, Harris shared with the BBC that he never made her feel pressured, describing him as warm, kind, and exceptionally talented.

Despite her age, Harris remains active. She participated in the SAG-AFTRA strike in New York City in July 2023, and in 2025, she proudly attended the red carpet premiere of a film featuring her daughter, Jennifer Ehle. This ongoing presence in public life keeps her connected to both her theatrical roots and her loyal Spider-Man fanbase.

Fans have continued to express their admiration for Harris’s portrayal of Aunt May, with many attributing her performance as a benchmark that later versions of the character have struggled to achieve. One widely shared sentiment captured the essence of the consensus, with a fan stating that Harris simply is Aunt May, highlighting the perfect casting from the outset.

Harris has navigated both personal and professional milestones with quiet grace, including the loss of her husband of 51 years, writer John Ehle, in March 2018. As she enters her 99th year surrounded by loved ones, Harris remains a unique link between the craftsmanship of old Hollywood and the contemporary blockbuster era.
