Marvel Studios has a knack for transforming even the briefest pre-show moments into marketing gold, and this month’s return to theaters is no exception. With ‘Avengers: Endgame’ back on the big screen as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ the studio is maximizing every second before the film begins to generate excitement for what lies ahead.

The re-release, which kicked off on September 25, is more than just a simple theatrical rerun. Marvel has included four brand-new scenes filmed during the production of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ making ‘Endgame Encore’ a crucial narrative link between the two films. Director Joe Russo has labeled it as “required viewing” ahead of the film’s release in December.

Moviegoers attending ‘Endgame Encore’ are in for an additional surprise before the feature starts. Footage circulating online reveals that theaters are now showcasing a ‘Doomsday’-themed “Silence Your Phones” PSA prior to screenings. This spot features the film’s ensemble of heroes coming together to remind audiences to silence their devices, all set to the iconic Avengers theme.

This isn’t the first time Marvel has employed a pre-show PSA to stir excitement for an upcoming release. The studio previously executed a similar strategy with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ in 2024, where Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s characters delivered a humorous, R-rated theater etiquette reminder that became a viral sensation ahead of that film’s launch.

In this instance, the focus shifts to ‘Doomsday’s’ impressive ensemble rather than comedic elements, giving audiences their first extended glimpse of the heroes united before the film’s December premiere. Given the success of the format with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ it’s a clever tactic for Marvel to keep ‘Doomsday’ at the forefront of moviegoers’ minds during each ‘Endgame Encore’ screening in the weeks to come.

The PSA is just one of the bonuses for audiences. Depending on the format, ‘Endgame Encore’ runs longer than the original film, with standard screenings adding about two extra minutes, while select IMAX and Infinity Vision presentations extend roughly five minutes longer, featuring more footage from ‘Doomsday.’ Marvel has also announced that guests attending the film in RealD 3D at participating 4DX Regal locations on opening night can receive a limited-edition, foil-embossed mini poster while supplies last.

Some fans have observed that the pre-show PSA and the pre-credits sneak peek have garnered as much attention as the four new in-film scenes themselves. This reaction highlights the significant anticipation surrounding every aspect of ‘Doomsday’ marketing at this stage. With plot leaks surfacing online before the re-release, some viewers might already have an inkling of what to expect, slightly tempering their excitement as they head into theaters.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ unites heroes from three distinct universes, including the Avengers and New Avengers of Earth-616, the Fantastic Four of Earth-828, and a separate universe’s X-Men, all coming together to confront Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. With such a vast cast and high stakes, Marvel clearly views every opportunity, even a brief phone reminder, as a chance to keep the buzz alive before the film’s release on December 18.

Whether these pre-show additions become the most memorable aspect of the ‘Endgame Encore’ experience remains to be seen, but they have undoubtedly succeeded in sparking conversation online.
