‘Furious’ Star Emmy Rossum Discusses ‘Shameless’ Nude Scenes Impact on Dating
Emmy Rossum dedicated nearly ten years to portraying one of television’s most unforgettable working-class heroines. However, her role as Fiona Gallagher on ‘Shameless’ came with unexpected repercussions. Regularly appearing nude on screen shaped her career in ways that extended well beyond the series itself.
Such visibility can linger long after a show concludes, particularly when a character becomes as culturally significant as Fiona did over the course of nine seasons. Rossum was just 24 when ‘Shameless’ debuted in 2011, meaning much of her twenties unfolded under that intense spotlight.
Now, Rossum is candidly discussing how that exposure complicated her personal life. In a conversation with Maria Sharapova on the September 16 episode of the “Pretty Tough” podcast, the actress shared that her nude scenes made dating significantly more challenging, as men often had preconceived notions about her based on her on-screen character.
“It got quite tricky because of the nudity on the show,” Rossum explained. “All of the guys that I would go out with had preconceived notions of who I was or how I was sexually.”
Rossum recounted a particularly memorable dating experience that has stayed with her over the years. She met a man on a plane who invited her out, but their date took an unexpected turn when his career aspirations were revealed.
“I met this guy on a plane and he was very cute and he took me out on a date,” Rossum recalled. “We were not meant to be together. But he was like, ‘I really want to be president someday.’ He’s like, ‘But I feel like running for office and dating someone who’s been exposed in the way that you have… do you think that would be tricky for me?’” Rossum remembered responding, “This is an insane conversation to have.”
That kind of reaction mirrors a broader frustration she expressed feeling throughout her twenties, as she balanced her personal identity with her public image. “You’re trying to figure out who you are,” she said. “You’re coming into your own as an artist. And there’s also all these preconceived notions about you that are out there and are associated with [you] because your body is your art, right? And people can get confused.”

Eventually, Rossum’s dating challenges led to a more stable chapter in her life. She married ‘Mr. Robot’ creator Sam Esmail in 2017, and they now have two children together, a five-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.
Prior to this marriage, Rossum was briefly wed to music executive Justin Siegel from 2008 to 2010, a relationship that unfolded during the earlier, more chaotic phase of her dating life she discussed on the podcast. Reflecting on that time now, years removed from her role as Fiona Gallagher and the pressures it entailed, Rossum’s insights provide a rare glimpse into how public perception can influence an actress’s private relationships in ways audiences seldom consider.
For an actress who spent nearly a decade defined by one of television’s most complex roles, the disconnect between her on-screen character and her true self has clearly left a lasting mark, one she is only now openly addressing years later.
