Superhero films have dominated box office discussions for over a decade, but one franchise stands out in its own league of success. What began as a modest risk with a lesser-known character in 2008 has evolved into the most significant force in contemporary filmmaking.

That risk was ‘Iron Man,’ the film that quietly initiated an unprecedented series of interconnected blockbusters under the direction of Kevin Feige. Few could have anticipated how vast this shared universe would become, both in scale and financial prowess.

Marvel Studios has now reached a remarkable milestone, with its 38 theatrical releases collectively grossing $35 billion worldwide, solidifying its status as the most successful franchise in cinematic history. This figure is unmatched by any other cinematic universe.

This latest achievement builds on a long history of records for the studio, including 10 films that have each surpassed $1 billion globally and two, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ that exceeded $2 billion. Marvel crossed the $30 billion mark back in 2024 with the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ becoming the first film franchise to reach that milestone.

To illustrate the magnitude of this accomplishment, the next closest rival, ‘Star Wars,’ still trails Marvel by tens of billions in global box office earnings. Meanwhile, franchises like ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Spider-Man’ as standalone series fall even further behind, each under $10 billion in total lifetime grosses.

Even franchises centered around significant individual films, like the ‘Avengers’ series, have needed only a few movies to exceed $7 billion, highlighting how much of Marvel’s total comes from crossover events rather than standalone films. This structure has become a defining characteristic that sets Marvel’s box office model apart from nearly every other franchise in Hollywood.

This new $35 billion milestone comes during a particularly active period for the franchise. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has already become one of the year’s biggest global releases, while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ recently returned to theaters as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore,’ achieving impressive numbers during its limited re-release.

Both releases are generating excitement ahead of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which is expected to bring back much of the franchise’s ensemble cast later this year. With the box office momentum Marvel has built throughout 2026, the studio’s next major crossover event is highly anticipated.

This trend underscores that even after nearly two decades and numerous films, audiences remain eager to revisit this universe time and again. Whether this ongoing enthusiasm can propel the franchise toward even greater totals in the future is one of the most intriguing narratives in modern Hollywood.

For a franchise rooted in interconnected storytelling across numerous films, reaching $35 billion is more than just a box office figure; it demonstrates that shared universes, when executed thoughtfully, can outshine virtually any other approach the industry has attempted. With Marvel’s current lineup of upcoming releases, this milestone is unlikely to be the last worth celebrating.
