Horror has emerged as one of the most reliable genres at the box office in recent years, and few directors have taken advantage of this trend quite like Zach Cregger. Following the success of ‘Barbarian’ and the Oscar-winning ‘Weapons,’ expectations were already high for his next project.

That project is an ambitious reboot of one of gaming’s most iconic horror franchises, giving Cregger the opportunity to revitalize a series that has struggled in recent years. Sony’s earlier attempt to reboot the property, 2021’s ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City,’ was met with both critical and commercial failure.

Cregger’s version has told a different story, with ‘Resident Evil’ now surpassing $196 million at the global box office against a reported production budget of $75 million. This marks a remarkable turnaround for a franchise many believed had reached its end.

The film’s opening weekend alone brought in $108.3 million worldwide, including a $60 million domestic debut, which is the largest opening in the franchise’s history. Reviews have also been strong, with ‘Resident Evil’ achieving scores as high as 95 to 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best-reviewed entry in the video game adaptation series.

This combination of positive reviews and box office momentum allowed ‘Resident Evil’ to surpass its estimated break-even point of around $150 million in just nine days, officially turning a profit for Sony Pictures. As the film continues to perform well into its second weekend, industry estimates suggest it could exceed $190 million globally soon, making the current $196 million milestone well within reach for further growth.

Industry analysts attribute Cregger’s involvement as a key factor in the reboot’s success. “Putting Zach Cregger in charge of a major franchise like ‘Resident Evil’ [made] something familiar feel fresh and original again,” said Rentrak’s Paul Dergarabedian, who also highlighted the increasing influence of younger horror audiences on box office performance.

Notably, Cregger’s interpretation of the material presents an entirely original story rather than directly adapting any specific game from the series, a choice that initially concerned some long-time fans. However, this approach has paid off, with the film focusing on a medical courier navigating a chaotic outbreak in Raccoon City instead of relying on established characters from the games.

Despite its current success, ‘Resident Evil’ still has some distance to cover before it can claim the title of the franchise’s highest earner. That title still belongs to 2016’s ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter,’ which grossed $312 million worldwide, a figure that Cregger’s film is increasingly likely to challenge given its current trajectory.

Questions have already begun to arise about whether Cregger might return for a potential sequel, especially considering his busy schedule of upcoming projects. “I can’t help thinking about other places this story could go,” Cregger told The Playlist when asked about his future involvement with the franchise ahead of the film’s release.

Given how thoroughly this reboot has outperformed its predecessor, both critically and commercially, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony moves quickly to capitalize on the momentum. Cregger’s ability to revitalize long-dormant horror properties has now been proven twice, first with ‘Barbarian’ and now with an entire studio franchise.

With ‘Resident Evil’ continuing to rise and Cregger’s reputation growing with each release, this reboot may be remembered as the moment the franchise finally regained its footing on the big screen. Whether this momentum leads to a full-fledged cinematic universe remains to be seen.
