Tom Holland Wants Spider-Man to Team Up With Johnny Storm in Future MCU Projects
Few comic book friendships are as cherished as that between Peter Parker and Johnny Storm. Fans have longed to see this dynamic in live action, but rights issues have often posed challenges. Recently, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Johnny Storm have resurfaced in discussions, thanks to a new interview.
These comments emerged from a special feature in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ #1000, an oversized milestone issue celebrating a thousand editions of the flagship series. It is set to release on September 30 at a price of $9.99. The interview features Holland alongside ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ director Destin Daniel Cretton.
In the interview, Holland expressed his desire for his Spider-Man to team up with Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm. He specifically mentioned the Bombastic Bag-Man suit, stating Bleeding Cool reported that “I love his relationship with Johnny Storm.” He conveyed enthusiasm for exploring this connection in the future.
The Bombastic Bag-Man is a humorous temporary outfit. In the comics, Peter borrows a Fantastic Four uniform and a paper bag mask from Johnny after discarding the black symbiote suit, literally tying the two heroes together.
Holland also shared his admiration for Brian Michael Bendis’ ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ run, revealing he has spent over a decade trying to bring one comedic moment from it to the big screen, including pitching a Kraven idea. He also highlighted the Clone Saga and a scene on a train roof where Spider-Man meets Spider-Woman.
He named the Spider-Man 2099 suit as another favorite, calling it epic, though he humorously noted he would look ridiculous in it since the character is a massive figure. This conversation underscores his desire to draw inspiration from comics, especially as ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ has grossed approximately $2.5 billion worldwide.
Holland hinted at this collaboration previously. In July, while promoting ‘Brand New Day,’ he was asked which MCU team-up he desired most and named Quinn. He mentioned that their comic book stories are entertaining and believes the two would get along well.
Quinn has echoed these sentiments. He told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ that he was “up for it.” He also referred to Holland as the best Spider-Man ever and mentioned that he once auditioned for the role himself.
The idea has backing from the top. Kevin Feige has stated that Marvel casts with a blue-sky dream of one day achieving this pairing. He described Johnny Storm and Peter Parker as one of the key relationships in Marvel comics, indicating it is now within the realm of possibility.
This marks a significant shift. Marvel Studios gained access to the Fantastic Four in 2019 after acquiring 20th Century Fox, while Sony retains the rights to Spider-Man’s live-action films. The ongoing collaboration between the two studios has made these discussions feasible.
The most likely venue for this pairing would be an Avengers film. Quinn is set to reprise his role as the Human Torch in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which premieres on December 18. At the time of earlier comments, Holland had not been confirmed for the lineup, and Marvel has not made any announcements since.
This leaves the door open for other possibilities, including a future Spider-Man movie. Holland’s indication that he would like to explore this relationship suggests there is interest from the star. However, whether the studios can synchronize schedules remains uncertain.
The comics have paired these two for decades, with Johnny often serving as a humorous best friend to Peter. Their banter is among the most quotable elements of the Marvel universe. Bringing this dynamic to the screen would provide a fun contrast to the more serious tone of the Multiverse Saga.
It would also allow both actors to showcase more range. Quinn has expressed a desire to collaborate with Holland, and Holland has reciprocated. With both sides eager, it’s only a matter of time before Marvel takes notice.
