The ‘Elsinore’ Trailer Features Andrew Scott in a Unique Hamlet Story
Few roles in theater carry the weight of Hamlet, and few actors embody it like Andrew Scott. Having portrayed the character more than any other throughout his career, Scott once delivered a version of the play that spanned 3 hours and 50 minutes, performing it 8 times a week. His latest project, the drama ‘Elsinore’, invites him to explore a distinctly different take on the Hamlet narrative.
This film draws inspiration from the life of Scottish actor Ian Charleson, renowned for his role in ‘Chariots of Fire’. In 1989, Charleson seized a remarkable opportunity to step in for Daniel Day-Lewis as Hamlet at London’s National Theatre after Day-Lewis abruptly exited mid-performance. He took on this monumental role while battling complications from AIDS.
Now, audiences can catch their first glimpse of this poignant story. Focus Features unveiled the first trailer for ‘Elsinore’ on Monday, a 2:29 teaser that begins with Scott gazing upward in a dimly lit theater, the rows of red seats fading into shadow behind him. The film is set to hit theaters on Nov. 20.
The trailer emphasizes the intersection of art and mortality. The official synopsis portrays the film as a deeply emotional and inspiring true story of a talented actor whose greatest challenge transforms into his most significant triumph. It reveals how Charleson confronts his own mortality with unwavering honesty, humor, and grace.
Olivia Colman stars alongside Scott as Margaret Johnson, one of the UK’s pioneering doctors specializing in AIDS. Billie Piper portrays casting director Patsy Pollock, who supports Charleson during his final days, while Johnny Flynn takes on the role of the show’s director.
The ensemble cast features Luke Thompson, David Dawson, Matthew Beard, Joe Locke, Monica Dolan, Georgie Glen, Sadie Soverall, Adeel Akhtar, Dickie Beau, Kadiff Kirwan, Juliet Stevenson, and Peter Mullan. Notably, Scott also serves as a producer for the film.
The fight of his life. The triumph of a lifetime.

Directed by Simon Stone, known for ‘The Dig’, the film is scripted by Stephen Beresford of ‘Pride’. Stone has described ‘Elsinore’ as a film crafted to advocate for the theater-going experience, noting that it was completed just days before its premiere at Telluride. Focus Features had an opening in its fall schedule, making the timing fortuitous.
The film has a runtime of 111 minutes, utilizing rehearsal and medical treatment montages, crafted by editor Valerio Bonelli, to build towards Charleson’s final performances.

‘Elsinore’ made its debut at Telluride on Sept. 4 before moving on to the Toronto International Film Festival, where it earned the International People’s Choice Award. Currently, it holds an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 75 on Metacritic.
Scott’s portrayal has become a focal point of discussion. Variety’s Clayton Davis hailed it as the role of Scott’s career, suggesting it positions him prominently in the Best Actor conversation he has been part of for years. Owen Gleiberman from Variety also commended Scott’s layered and moving performance.
However, the reception has not been entirely unanimous. Some critics who praised Scott felt that the surrounding film did not match his caliber, with a few pointing out issues with the editing and the reliance on montage. One review suggested that this construction complicates the assessment of Scott’s performance.
This divide may render ‘Elsinore’ one of the more intriguing topics of debate during the awards season this fall. Even skeptics acknowledge Scott’s extraordinary work, while supporters highlight the film’s warmth, humor, and its portrayal of queer men beyond mere victimhood.
Focus Features plans to release ‘Elsinore’ in select theaters on Nov. 20, with a wider rollout expected over Thanksgiving and into December. StudioCanal will bring the film to UK cinemas on Jan. 29, 2027.
For Scott, the timing of this release is fitting. After years of acclaimed performances on stage and screen, this appears to be the showcase role his fans have eagerly anticipated.
