For years, Josh Hartnett has been recognized as a Hollywood heartthrob, thanks to his memorable performances in ‘The Virgin Suicides’ and ‘Pearl Harbor’. He graced People’s “World’s Most Beautiful” list and has been linked romantically to several high-profile celebrities. However, his career trajectory has shifted in recent years.

In the last couple of years, Hartnett, 48, has received acclaim for his significant roles in FX’s ‘The Bear’ and the Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer’. He also portrayed a serial killer in ‘Trap’ in 2024 and made an appearance in an episode of ‘Black Mirror’. Each of these roles has contributed to the narrative of his career renaissance.

This buildup made Hartnett’s appearance at the ‘Verity’ premiere in New York feel like a significant milestone. He walked the carpet at AMC Lincoln Square 13 on September 29 alongside Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson for the screening of the Colleen Hoover adaptation.

Hartnett donned a dark, subtly checked double-breasted suit over a pinstriped shirt with an open collar. He completed his look with a watch, and in the photo shared by Variety, he stands with his hands clasped and a relaxed, confident demeanor.

The tonal suit felt sophisticated yet effortless. The understated choice stood out against the premiere’s bold red backdrop featuring oversized white ‘Verity’ lettering. His wife, actor Tamsin Egerton, accompanied him on the carpet.

The New York event followed the UK gala screening on September 24 at Curzon Mayfair in London. There, Hartnett wore a black suit and posed with Johnson, while Egerton joined him, and the couple shared affectionate moments for the photographers.

Hathaway was absent from the London event, opting to do press in New York that day. The New York premiere brought the three leads together on the same carpet.

In the film, Hartnett portrays Jeremy Crawford, the husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway. Johnson takes on the role of Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who moves into the Crawford home to ghostwrite for Verity and finds herself entangled in a web of unsettling confessions about Jeremy.

Jeremy is a character that has sparked considerable debate among readers, and Hartnett’s portrayal is expected to ignite discussions among longtime fans. One analysis suggests that his casting transforms Jeremy into a suspect rather than a romantic interest, as audience assumptions are put to the test before he delivers any lines. Hartnett mentioned that even his 12-year-old goddaughter, who is a fan of the book, was not in favor of him playing Jeremy.

For Hartnett, collaborating with Hathaway was a personal ambition. Early set photos from New York City captured the on-screen couple running hand in hand through the streets, and images of him with a blood-splattered Johnson in March 2025 gained significant attention online.

Hartnett resides in England with Egerton and their four children, on what he describes as a small farm filled with animals in Hampshire. He has stated that a compelling script is what draws him out of his home, and ‘Verity’ piqued his interest.

He has also noted that family life keeps him grounded, humorously mentioning that he feels like a foreigner in his own home since his wife and children are all English.

Just six days after ‘Verity’ debuts, Hartnett will lead the Netflix series ‘Below’ on October 8, set in a Newfoundland fishing town. He has remarked that the two projects are quite different, and he has always aimed to showcase his versatility, even if he didn’t receive as many opportunities in his earlier years.

‘Verity’ is set to hit US theaters on Friday, October 2, directed by Michael Showalter from a script by Nick Antosca.

Online reactions to Hartnett’s premiere look have been positive. Many fans praised the sharp suit as a perfect fit for him, appreciating the polished yet relaxed vibe.

Others expressed a preference for his more casual style, while some indicated they are more interested in his interpretation of Jeremy Crawford than the red carpet appearance.
