Anthony Head captivated audiences for decades with memorable roles, but none were as delightfully detestable as Rupert Mannion on ‘Ted Lasso’. As Rebecca’s unfaithful ex-husband and the former owner of AFC Richmond, he served as the show’s original villain, portrayed with such finesse that viewers could understand Rebecca’s initial attraction to him.

Head passed away in June at the age of 72. His daughters, Emily and Daisy, shared that he died peacefully from pneumonia complications, surrounded by family. This news led to an outpouring of tributes from co-stars throughout his career, leaving fans of the Apple TV comedy curious about how the series would honor his memory.

This week, fans received their answer. In the penultimate episode of the show’s fourth season, ‘Ted Lasso’ concluded with a poignant title card that read “In Memory of Anthony Head,” paying homage to the beloved recurring cast member who portrayed Rupert in the first three seasons.

Many viewers anticipated the tribute would occur in an episode featuring Rupert. After his appearances in episodes 8 and 9 of season 4, it felt fitting to honor him following the conclusion of his two-episode arc.

Displaying the card at the end of episode 8 might have spoiled the surprise regarding who was purchasing the shares. Instead, it appeared at the end of episode 9, ‘Mae Rides the Bus,’ enhancing the emotional weight of the episode’s final moments while a song by Kingfishr played.

Head did not feature in the new season, which had already wrapped filming in January, months before his passing. Sources indicate that no storylines were modified after his death, and there were no formal plans for his return, as he had not been approached officially.

Head was a recurring character in the first two seasons before becoming a series regular in the third. His final acting credits included the third season of ‘Ted Lasso’, which aired in 2023, and the 2024 Prime Video film ‘Upgraded’.

For many fans, Head will forever be remembered as Rupert Giles, the Watcher and mentor on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’. He was a main cast member for the first five seasons and returned as a recurring character in the final two.

He also portrayed the Prime Minister in ‘Little Britain’ and King Uther Pendragon in ‘Merlin’. Fans have noted the stark contrast between the warm, paternal Giles and the self-absorbed Rupert, showcasing his impressive range.

Head’s passing elicited heartfelt tributes from his colleagues. Hannah Waddingham, who played Rebecca, remarked that there is no Rebecca without Rupert, calling him one of the finest gentlemen she had known and praising his deep care for fellow actors and crew members.

Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, described him as a brilliant actor who embodied the worst person imaginable, while Jeremy Swift, who plays Higgins, expressed his fondness for Head, stating that the cast adored him.

From the ‘Buffy’ family, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, David Boreanaz, Charisma Carpenter, and Emma Caulfield all shared their tributes. Gellar expressed her gratitude for knowing him and thanked his daughters for sharing their father with the world.

Head’s death came just six months after the passing of his partner of 37 years, animal-welfare advocate Sarah Fisher, in December 2025. His daughters described her as an extraordinary, kind, and talented mother.

Given this context, the simple card at the end of the episode carried profound significance, prompting fans to share their cherished memories of Rupert and Giles online.

The season finale marks the last chapter of the show’s latest run. For Head’s fans, the tribute serves as a reminder of his diverse career and the lasting affection people held for him.

Apple TV chose to keep the gesture understated, allowing the card to convey its message without an extended segment. This approach felt fitting for an actor whose performances spoke volumes.
