‘The Night Agent’ Wraps Filming on Final Season Ahead of Peter Sutherland’s Last Mission

Every great spy thriller eventually faces the challenge of how to conclude its story, and few streaming sensations have transitioned from a simple White House phone line to a thrilling global action franchise as swiftly as ‘The Night Agent’. The Netflix series has built its reputation on fast-paced storytelling and a relentless hero. Now, the journey is finally approaching its conclusion.

The series has had a unique trajectory. Adapted from Matthew Quirk’s novel, it premiered in 2023 and quickly became one of Netflix’s standout hits, with its first season securing a spot in the global top 10 English-language TV chart for 17 weeks and ranking as the platform’s most-watched show during the first half of that year. However, viewership declined, with the second season landing ninth in the first half of 2025 and the third only making the top 10 for a mere four weeks earlier this year.

This brings us to the latest news. On September 30, Netflix announced that ‘The Night Agent’ has completed filming for its fourth and final season, sharing a 42-second behind-the-scenes video that hints at new allies, adversaries, and threats for Peter Sutherland. The season is expected to premiere on the streaming platform in 2027.

The teaser emphasizes action, showcasing Gabriel Basso back in character as Peter, with elaborate set pieces, including a plane being dramatically exploded. While an exact release date has yet to be confirmed, anticipation is building.

The announcement of the show’s conclusion was gradual. Netflix renewed the series for a fourth season in March, later revealing on May 4 that it would be the final installment, coinciding with the start of production in Los Angeles. This marked the first time the show filmed on the West Coast, as previous seasons were set in New York.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Television have framed the finale as a planned conclusion rather than a cancellation. Creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan expressed his desire to provide a satisfying ending for the show’s loyal fanbase. Some reports suggest that declining viewership across seasons influenced the decision to wrap up the narrative.

The wrap-up was not entirely unexpected. Cast member Annabeth Gish shared in a TikTok video on September 21 that she had completed her work for the season, while reports indicated that filming would continue through September.

Basso stars as Peter Sutherland, a former low-level FBI agent who has taken on increasingly perilous assignments with the bureau’s counterintelligence unit, Night Action. The third season concluded with his superior, FBI Deputy Director Mosley, informing him that he would be receiving a partner, setting the stage for what lies ahead.

The new cast reflects this development. Titus Welliver is reportedly portraying Duval, a special DOJ prosecutor, while Trevante Rhodes is believed to be playing Dom, Peter’s new partner, and Li Jun Li is thought to be playing Dom’s wife, Min. Elizabeth Lail joins as Zoe, Peter’s ex-fiancée, while Abigail Breslin plays Cahlin, a young FBI agent investigating Night Action, David Denman portrays Ford, a veteran CIA agent, and Gish plays Holland, another FBI agent looking into Peter.

Fans have been eagerly asking one question above all. Luciane Buchanan is reportedly set to reprise her role as the beloved Rose Larkin, whose absence from the third season sparked considerable discussion among viewers. While Netflix has not officially confirmed her return, audiences will have to wait and see how the finale addresses her storyline.

This uncertainty adds to the show’s allure. With the series concluding, some speculate that viewers might see more familiar faces return than usual, possibly even in flashbacks.

Netflix has only committed to a 2027 release, although some sources anticipate that the season could debut in the first quarter, potentially in January or February. This remains speculative, and Netflix may provide a different timeline.

The show also enjoys a solid critical reputation, holding an 82% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes across all three seasons, though audience reception is slightly lower at 67% on the Popcornmeter. Whether the final season can deliver a satisfying conclusion remains to be seen.
