Marvel Boss Kevin Feige Hints MCU’s Future After ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gearing up for one of its most significant moments in years. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026, featuring Robert Downey Jr. in a leading role as Doctor Doom. Recent comments from Kevin Feige indicate that the MCU has much more to explore beyond this film.
This upcoming installment marks the return of the Russo brothers to the franchise. Initially scheduled for May 2026, the release was postponed to December, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following on Dec. 17, 2027. Both films are part of Phase Six of the MCU.
Feige made his remarks during a celebration of his career, where he was honored as Pioneer of the Year by the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation at the Beverly Hilton. The event was attended by notable figures such as Chris Pratt, Jon Favreau, and Disney’s Alan Bergman. Celebrating 25 years with Marvel, Feige’s comments come on the heels of the studio’s success with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Feige stated, “‘Doomsday’ is only our 39th movie — we’ve still got a lot of stories to tell, a lot of movies to make.” He emphasized that the Marvel mythology is rich with storytelling potential and described it as the longest-running fictional narrative in history.
Fans have particularly focused on the notion of this being the 39th film. With such immense anticipation, a cast exceeding two dozen, and the weight of a multi-year saga, Feige’s perspective suggests that the franchise is still in its early chapters. He also mentioned that the team enjoys creating these films.
Feige acknowledged the challenges behind the scenes, noting that it can be easy to get lost in the daily grind of production. However, he believes that stepping back to remember the audience for whom the films are made makes it all worthwhile. He also countered the narrative that moviegoing is declining, asserting that the studio must create films that entice audiences back to theaters.
Looking beyond ‘Secret Wars’, the slate for Phase Seven is already taking shape. This phase will conclude with ‘Secret Wars’, and three theatrical films are currently scheduled, including an untitled X-Men film, ‘Ghost Rider’ starring Ryan Gosling, and ‘Black Panther 3’ featuring David Jonsson as the new Black Panther. Additional projects in development include a sequel to Shang-Chi, ‘Nova’, and ‘Armor Wars’.
Meanwhile, ‘Doomsday’ is poised to be a monumental event. The trailer revealed Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers returning for the first time since ‘Avengers: Endgame’, alongside a cast that features Patrick Stewart, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Kelsey Grammer from the Fox X-Men films. The Russos have indicated that the film will run approximately 2 and a half hours.
The journey to release has not been without its bumps. Feige has acknowledged that the delay was due to the film not being ready in time. With the film now complete and awaiting its debut, attention has turned to whether it can meet the high expectations.
Feige’s comments come at a pivotal moment for Marvel. Between ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’, the MCU is expected to experience a relative hiatus, with a few Disney+ series and specials bridging the gap until Doom returns. His message at the dinner was clear: this is not the end.
Feige also gave a heartfelt shoutout to the Rialto, his hometown theater in New Jersey, emphasizing the importance of cinemas to culture and humanity. This aligns with a studio head who is betting on the big screen, even as the industry grapples with the future of moviegoing.
