Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have maintained a strong friendship for many years. Their bond began when Damon was just 10 years old and Affleck was 8, leading them to co-write ‘Good Will Hunting’ while living together in Los Angeles. Over the years, they have transformed their friendship into a successful partnership, with their latest venture being the Netflix thriller ‘Animals’.

The journey of this film has an interesting backstory. Initially, ‘Animals’ was designed with Damon in the lead role, while Affleck was set to direct. However, a rights issue caused production delays, prompting Affleck to shift his focus to ‘The Accountant 2’, which ultimately postponed the project.

This delay resulted in significant changes. Damon had to withdraw from the lead role due to scheduling conflicts with Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, which allowed Affleck to step into the role himself. Nevertheless, Damon remained involved as a producer, leading us to the premiere event on Thursday night.

The Hollywood Reporter shared a brief video capturing Damon and his wife, Luciana, as they joined Affleck at the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Animals’. The footage features the trio posing together on the red carpet in front of the film’s Netflix-branded backdrop. Damon sported a pinstriped suit, while Luciana dazzled in a bright red pantsuit, and Affleck looked sharp in a navy suit. The event took place on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Westwood Village Theater.

Luciana was not just a guest; she is also a producer on the film and a partner at Artists Equity, the production company co-founded by Affleck and Damon. Affleck took on the roles of writer, director, and star of the film, while Damon retains a producer credit alongside him.

The cast made a notable appearance as well. Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun, Luis Gerardo Méndez, and Adriana Paz posed with Affleck on the carpet, while Ray Fisher was also in attendance. However, Gillian Anderson was not present at the event.

In a light-hearted interview with Entertainment Weekly, Affleck playfully teased Damon about his decision to leave ‘Animals’ for ‘The Odyssey’. This banter has become even more amusing considering ‘The Odyssey’ was released on July 17, 2026, and has performed well at the box office. For Damon, the choice proved beneficial, as he continues to share in the success of Affleck’s film from his role as a producer.

Washington also joined the cast during the reshuffle, taking over the female lead role from Jennifer Garner. Principal photography commenced on March 7, 2025, in Los Angeles, with the ensemble rehearsing for several weeks before filming, including location work at the Kimballs’ luxurious Los Angeles home, according to Netflix.

‘Animals’ represents more than just a film for Affleck and Damon. Artists Equity was established in November 2022 with financial support from Gerry Cardinale and RedBird Capital. The studio’s portfolio includes films like ‘Air’, ‘The Instigators’, ‘Small Things Like These’, ‘Unstoppable’, and ‘The Accountant 2’.

The studio has secured a first-look streaming deal with Netflix, and Variety reported that Artists Equity will oversee creative and production aspects for its films under this collaboration. The same report highlighted the audience’s positive reception of ‘The Rip’, the Netflix thriller featuring both Affleck and Damon, and noted that ‘Animals’ is the next film set for release. Netflix film chairman Dan Lin stated that the streamer shares the studio’s vision of producing bold, original films.

This context adds significance to the premiere, making it a showcase for the company they built together. Damon’s presence on the red carpet aligns with the studio’s model, where he remains a founding partner even when not appearing on screen.

The film centers on Mark Kimball (Affleck), a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped. Washington portrays his wife Abigail, and as the couple races to gather the ransom, they become ensnared in a web of deceit. They must navigate choices and unveil secrets that could shatter their lives.

The cast also features Anderson, Yeun, Paz, Méndez, Fisher, and Matt Gerald, with the film rated R and a runtime of 1 hour and 48 minutes. It is set to premiere on Netflix and in select theaters on Friday, Oct. 9.

For Affleck and Damon, the premiere was an opportunity to celebrate a project that evolved significantly from its initial concept. Although Damon may not appear in the film, his support for it was evident.
