‘Dune: Part Three’ Early Screenings Generate Positive Buzz Ahead of Release
Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune‘ saga is approaching its epic conclusion, with anticipation mounting for ‘Dune: Part Three’, set to release on December 18. This installment adapts Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune Messiah’ and will conclude the trilogy, taking place 17 years after the events of ‘Dune: Part Two’. Fans are eager to see how Villeneuve wraps up Paul Atreides’ journey.
The excitement has been stoked by a series of previews. Earlier this year, the first seven minutes were showcased at CinemaCon, where reactions likened the opening spacecraft sequence to the Normandy assault in ‘Saving Private Ryan’. Warner Bros. also screened a rough cut exceeding three hours internally, which reportedly received a very positive response.
However, the film had yet to be seen by the public until recently. A select group of outsiders has now viewed it, and initial impressions are starting to emerge.
According to a new report from Variety, ‘Dune: Part Three’ held its first intimate screenings last week, and the early feedback has been very encouraging. The report was accompanied by striking character portraits from the film. Sources indicated that these small-group screenings have generated positive early word, as noted by Variety.
This report appeared in Variety’s Golden Globes predictions, where the film is already being considered for potential nominations. Variety forecasts that ‘Dune: Part Three’ could earn four Golden Globe nominations. The outlet also highlighted that Robert Pattinson has four films releasing this year, including ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’.
World of Reel pointed out that once a few remaining festival titles are screened, ‘Dune: Part Three’ will be among the last major Oscar contenders yet to be seen by the broader industry. The site suggested that if the film lives up to the buzz, Villeneuve may finally receive the recognition he deserves. He has only been nominated for Best Director once, for 2016’s ‘Arrival’, and was overlooked for both earlier ‘Dune’ films despite their Best Picture nominations.
The timing of these screenings is advantageous in several ways. It contributes to a lengthy awards campaign. Variety noted that ‘Dune: Part Three’ is more likely to gain traction in the early awards race compared to Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, given Marvel’s past handling of prerelease screenings.
Additionally, it builds momentum ahead of a significant box office clash. Both films are set to release on December 18, a showdown fans have dubbed Dunesday. Warner Bros. has confirmed that they selected this date first and have no plans to change it.

Warner Bros. has heavily invested in exclusive formats. IMAX has secured a three-week exclusive run for the film during the holiday season, effectively shutting out ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ from IMAX entirely. Insider screenings will begin on December 14 in IMAX 70mm, expand to digital IMAX on December 15, and open to other premium formats on December 17, generating buzz four days before the wide release.
World of Reel also highlighted that Villeneuve opted to shoot the third film on film, a shift from the digital format used in the first two movies. This more organic aesthetic appears stunning in the latest teaser, which may contribute to the enthusiasm of early viewers.
The early numbers are promising. Estimates from World of Reel suggest that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could open with $360 million to $400 million domestically, while ‘Dune: Part Three’ might reach $125 million or more. If it achieves this, it would surpass the $83 million that ‘Dune: Part Two’ earned during its opening weekend in 2024.
Presales have also been noteworthy. Reports from CinemaBlend indicated that the 38 participating IMAX 70mm theaters are experiencing numerous sellouts for the opening weekend. Looper reported that the film has already earned $10 million in wider presale releases.
At this stage, these reactions are preliminary and not a comprehensive critical assessment. Reviews are still months away, and the film will need to meet the high expectations it has generated. However, the initial feedback from the first viewers indicates that the final chapter is on a promising path.
The cast features Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Pattinson as Scytale. Villeneuve aims for this film to be his final installment in the ‘Dune’ series. As the December release date approaches, fans will be eagerly awaiting more reactions.
