Florence Pugh has had an incredibly busy week. Netflix’s ‘East of Eden’ premiered on Oct. 1, and the actress has been at the forefront of a promotional campaign that has produced a series of stunning images. Her latest collection of ‘East of Eden’ portraits takes on a softer, dreamlike quality.

This seven-episode limited series adapts John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, with Pugh portraying Cathy Ames while also serving as an executive producer. The narrative reframes the multigenerational Trask family saga from Cathy’s viewpoint. Before diving into the new photos, it’s worth noting how this project came to fruition.

Zoe Kazan wrote and executive produced all seven episodes. She is the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 film adaptation featuring James Dean, adding a significant family legacy to the project. Pugh was Kazan’s first choice for Cathy and joined the team in 2021 after reading the initial scripts and series outline.

New images of Pugh, captured by Emilio Madrid for ‘East of Eden’ press, have been unveiled. One striking photo shows her looking over her shoulder with her hair styled in an elegant updo, dressed in a blush satin slip gown with a long ribbon-like drape and sparkling earrings. The warm bokeh lights in the background lend the image a golden, cinematic ambiance.

The second image is particularly captivating. It features Pugh multiplied across a series of mirrored reflections, creating a kaleidoscopic effect that expands her figure throughout the frame. Fiction Horizon described the set as a softer, dreamlike interpretation of the campaign, offering one last ethereal glimpse of Pugh’s Cathy before audiences experience her character firsthand.

The mirrored imagery is a fitting choice, as Cathy is a character who has always been elusive. The multiplied reflections symbolize a woman with many facets, serving as a visual metaphor that aligns perfectly with a role defined by mystery.

These Madrid portraits add to an already diverse array of ‘East of Eden’ imagery. Netflix has released photos of Pugh in a vintage off-shoulder gown on a patterned sofa, as well as reclining in a vintage chair in a dimly lit, moody environment. Pugh also graced the series’ New York premiere on Sept. 30 at the Plaza Hotel, alongside castmates including Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Ciarán Hinds, Tracy Letts, and Martha Plimpton.

Netflix’s Tudum has portrayed her performance as transcending a mere role. A feature on the site states that Pugh does not just play Cathy; she fights for her, which aligns with how the series portrays a character often relegated to the sidelines.

In the 1955 film, Cathy was portrayed by Jo Van Fleet, who had less than 20 minutes of screen time. In Kazan’s reimagining, Cathy is as much a focal point as any other character. TheWrap describes Pugh’s interpretation as a simmering force of pure, often destructive will, frequently cruel and unyieldingly single-minded.

Kazan drew inspiration from letters Steinbeck wrote to his editor during the novel’s creation, where his views on Cathy appeared to evolve, revealing his growing curiosity about her character. Kazan describes Cathy as private, not only to other characters but also to readers and even to Steinbeck himself. This approach allows Pugh to portray a woman who is more than just a villain.

The story chronicles successive generations of the Trask and Hamilton families in California’s Salinas Valley, destined to reenact the tale of Cain and Abel. Netflix’s official description states that in the early 1900s, a fiercely independent woman creates a rift between two brothers, igniting a saga that unfolds over two generations. Abbott plays Adam Trask, while Faist portrays his brother Charles.

The series also features Hoon Lee, Joseph Zada, Joe Anders, and Costa D’Angelo, among others. Filmed in New Zealand, including locations on the South Island such as Dunedin and Oamaru, viewers can now stream the series and determine if the adaptation meets the high expectations set by its polished promotional campaign.

For Pugh, this series arrives during a particularly busy time. She is also set to reprise her role as Princess Irulan in ‘Dune: Part Three’, which is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 18. If these portraits are any indication, her streak of striking visuals is far from over.
