This chapter delves into the intertwining fates of characters, revealing secrets that will resonate throughout the Highlands. If you’re looking for the ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ season 2 episode 3 recap and ending explained, here’s what transpired in ‘Rabbits Don’t Swim.’

The Starz prequel explores the lives of Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp’s parents, oscillating between the 18th-century Highlands and the early 20th century. Season 2 debuted on September 18, with the third episode released on October 2, following an initial pair of episodes that focused primarily on Henry’s narrative.

The episode kicks off with Brian and Dougal leading their men through the Highlands to unite with the Jacobite forces. Meanwhile, at Lord Lovat’s residence, Julia encounters a new scullery maid named Seema, portrayed by Lauren McQueen. Seema reveals her past connection with Henry, claiming she was his lady during his time of mourning. Although the Grants sent her to Lovat’s home for Julia’s supposed protection, Julia remains skeptical.

Julia requests Lord Lovat to send Seema back to the Grants, but Seema insists she is there to safeguard her, escalating the tension in an already delicate situation.

The main conflict unfolds at Castle Leoch. As Dougal and the others engage in battle, James MacKinney, played by Ryan Fletcher, arrives with his son Robert and a small group to seize the castle. They eliminate the lone guard and capture the women, leaving Colum to manage the crisis alone.

Ellen’s timely departure from the dinner table proves fortuitous as she hides in a secret passage. MacKinney demands the keys and money, but Colum informs him that everything is registered in Ellen’s name, a fact confirmed by Ned.

MacKinney then shatters Colum’s hopes of rescue by revealing that Lord Lovat has allied with the Crown, putting the Frasers and the MacKenzies in a precarious position. This twist heightens the stakes for all involved in the impending conflict.

Meanwhile, Ellen, portrayed by Harriet Slater, takes decisive action. When one of MacKinney’s men attempts to escort the women for confinement, she swiftly kills him with a bow and arrow. Ellen and the other women use whatever resources they can find to fend off the intruders, employing the clan’s dogs and spilling oil on the floor to create a slippery trap. They even drop a tapestry on some of the attackers in the chapel, stabbing through the fabric.

The victory, however, comes with a heavy price. Janet MacKenzie is fatally wounded during the struggle and dies in Ellen’s arms, requesting to be buried with flowers. The emotional moments shared between the sisters before the battle make her loss even more poignant.

After the chaos, Ellen reveals her pregnancy, promising that if she has a daughter, she will name her Janet. Maura, feeling out of place among the MacKenzies, decides to take her chances with MacKinney, although she refuses to betray her family and warns him of the Grants’ potential wrath. Robert also makes a narrow escape.

The episode concludes by setting the stage for the next part of the season. Ellen and a few women from the family set out to alert Brian and Dougal about Lovat’s betrayal, with Ellen galloping on horseback to deliver a crucial message. This moment underscores the urgency of the war that awaits them.

Additionally, the episode hints at a lingering secret. Ellen had previously jilted Maura’s brother Malcolm before marrying Dougal, and Maura remains unaware of Ellen’s involvement in his death. This revelation could become a significant plot point as the season progresses.

The upcoming episode, ‘A Portion of My Soul,’ is set to air on October 9, with new episodes available on the Starz app at midnight and on the Starz channel at 8 p.m. ET. Although the series has not yet been renewed for a third season, Starz is committed to expanding the franchise following the conclusion of the flagship series in May. Ellen’s urgent mission to warn the army will likely shape the next episode.
