DC Studios is gearing up for the Halloween season with its most unconventional superhero release to date. ‘Clayface’ marks the studio’s first foray into horror, diverging from its usual focus on iconic characters like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The film is set to hit theaters on Oct. 23.

Directed by James Watkins and penned by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, ‘Clayface’ tells the story of Matt Hagen, portrayed by Tom Rhys Harries, an actor whose encounter with the mob leaves him disfigured in a Hollywood-inspired origin tale. With an R rating, this body-horror film raises intriguing commercial questions.

Recent insights from DiscussingFilm on X, dated Oct. 2, indicate that ‘Clayface’ is projected to open with a domestic box office between $23 million and $33 million. This forecast is based on estimates from Boxoffice Pro, which provided the anticipated opening weekend range.

The report also offers some context for comparison. ‘Clayface’ is the third theatrical release from James Gunn’s DC Universe, following Watkins’ previous film, ‘Speak No Evil,’ which debuted to $11.3 million domestically. Additionally, it references the $67 million opening of ‘Black Adam,’ another supervillain spinoff released in late October.

However, not all forecasts are as optimistic. Early projections from Box Office Theory suggested a domestic opening in the range of $20 million to $26 million. Together, these forecasts imply an opening weekend in the mid-$20 million range.

The film’s budget adds another layer to these numbers. With a budget of $40 million, ‘Clayface’ will need to gross approximately $80 million to $100 million to break even, based on standard industry calculations.

The tracking data reveals an interesting dynamic. ‘Clayface’ has a 32% awareness level, but among those aware of the film, 21% express intent to see it on opening weekend. This suggests a smaller audience but one that is nearly twice as committed to attending on day one.

The release schedule will also play a crucial role. According to Boxoffice Pro, Fathom Entertainment’s ‘Wildwood’ is set to open on the same day, with an expected range of $10 million to $15 million. Additionally, ‘Street Fighter,’ an IMAX release, is scheduled to debut one week earlier.

DC’s recent performance adds context to these predictions. Boxoffice Pro’s latest forecast estimates ‘Supergirl’ will open between $45 million and $55 million. Despite its disappointing run, ‘Supergirl’ has already surpassed the $100 million mark globally. A smaller, horror-themed film like ‘Clayface’ carries different expectations.

There is potential for the numbers to increase. Typically, ticket sales from Monday to Thursday account for 35% to 50% of the opening weekend total, which could elevate the first full week’s earnings to between $34 million and $48 million, based on early estimates.

At this point, the outlook appears cautiously optimistic. The upcoming weeks of marketing, reviews, and ticket sales will determine if ‘Clayface’ can achieve the projected $23 million to $33 million range. Remember, ‘Clayface’ opens in theaters on Oct. 23.
