Few movie lines have transformed a calendar date into a celebration quite like ‘Mean Girls’ has. Every year on October 3, fans quote the film, don pink attire, and fill social media with references to a memorable moment in a math class. This annual tradition honors a movie that debuted in 2004.

The iconic scene occurs about 24 minutes into the film when Aaron Samuels, portrayed by Jonathan Bennett, asks Cady Heron, played by Lindsay Lohan, what day it is. She replies that it is October 3. Written by Tina Fey, the film has inspired a Broadway musical and a 2024 movie adaptation featuring Reneé Rapp.

Lohan has consistently marked this special day. In 2015, she shared a screenshot from the scene on Instagram, and in 2018, she recreated the exchange in a short video that included her brother Dakota. In 2024, she and Lacey Chabert promoted their Netflix holiday films on the 20th anniversary of the date.

This year, she did it once more. Lohan recreated her famous “it’s October 3rd” moment from ‘Mean Girls.’ The seven-second video, posted by Lohan, features her sitting at a desk in a puffy dark jacket with a notebook in front of her, while a man leans in beside her holding a pencil.

Lohan shared the video on Instagram, where she is seen writing notes in a setting reminiscent of the movie. She then looks at the camera and winks, captioning it with, “It’s October 3rd,” followed by a pink heart emoji.

The clip quickly gained traction, amassing over 244,000 views on X within hours of Pop Base’s post. Fans flooded the comments with greetings for Mean Girls Day, with one user simply wishing a happy Mean Girls Day. The enthusiastic response highlights the enduring popularity of the film.

Lohan’s co-stars have also kept the tradition alive. Bennett has expressed that he celebrates Mean Girls Day annually, viewing it as an honor to commemorate the film and its fans. In 2024, he recreated the scene for a Reel shared by People, and other cast members, including Amanda Seyfried and Rajiv Surendra, have participated over the years.

The date also keeps the possibility of a sequel alive. Lohan mentioned in a 2016 Facebook Live interview with CNN that she had been actively trying to make a ‘Mean Girls 2,’ although it wasn’t entirely in her control. A decade later, fans continue to express their desire for a sequel.

The charm of the scene lies in its simplicity. There’s no grand spectacle, just a boy asking a straightforward question and a girl providing an answer that fans have echoed for over two decades. This straightforwardness has made it easy for both stars and fans to recreate.

For Lohan, the yearly post serves as a subtle acknowledgment of a role that significantly influenced her career. After all these years, she still knows precisely what day it is.
