Live-Action ‘Naruto’ Movie Leak Reveals Changes for Sakura and Sasuke
The live-action ‘Naruto’ movie has been in development for years, but progress is finally gaining traction. Lionsgate has officially enlisted Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ to write and direct the adaptation, with the announcement made in February 2024.
Since that time, the project has steadily advanced. Cretton, who also directed ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ is collaborating with Tasha Huo on the script, and the original creator Masashi Kishimoto has given his approval. A global casting search for the roles of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura commenced on July 9, and filming is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2027.
Recently, new details have emerged. Geek Vibes Nation on X, citing @DanielRPK, reports that the movie will adapt the Land of Waves arc, with ‘Naruto: Mission to the Land of Waves’ being considered as the title. The post also indicates that the main characters will remain 12 to 13 years old.

This aligns with a separate rumor from Knight Edge Media, which describes the film as a faithful adaptation of the arc with some modifications. The outlet also claims the movie will be rated hard PG-13, featuring plenty of swearing and humor reminiscent of Marvel films, with production set to begin in early 2027 in the United Kingdom.
The Land of Waves arc serves as a natural starting point. It marks the first story in the manga, where Team 7 embarks on its initial major mission, escorting a bridge builder named Tazuna while facing rogue ninja Zabuza and his ally Haku. The arc concludes with Haku’s death, a memorable moment in the series.
The most intriguing claims revolve around the main trio. Reports suggest that Sakura will be more powerful from the outset, already possessing her abilities, while Naruto has a keen interest in ninja history. Additionally, Sasuke is said to have feelings for Sakura, while Naruto does not.
Sakura’s backstory is also rumored to differ significantly. It is said that she comes from a wealthy family, her father died during Kurama’s attack, and her mother is portrayed as snobbish.
A major shift involves Naruto’s powers. According to the reports, becoming a Jinchuriki requires a specific bloodline, and Naruto inherits his mother’s, making him the only suitable host for Kurama as she is dying. Knight Edge Media similarly notes that the Uzumaki clan is recognized for its special blood linked to becoming a Jinchuriki in the Leaf Village.
A reported plot synopsis from another insider supports this narrative, indicating that the mission becomes far more perilous than anticipated, compelling Naruto to confront his inner demons, including the literal demon behind his power.
It’s important to note that none of this information is official. Lionsgate has yet to confirm this plot, and the official ‘Naruto’ site currently only acknowledges the creative team and the global casting search. Another report mentions that the connection to the Land of Waves is still speculative, as the film could ultimately feature an original storyline.
Conflicting reports also exist regarding casting. One source claims the characters are 12 to 13 years old, while another suggests a casting call sought actors over 18, leading to discrepancies in the age range being considered.
Cretton has hinted at his approach in a conversation with Rolling Stone, expressing a strong connection to ‘Naruto’ and suggesting a focus on the underdog story central to the manga.
As of now, there is no confirmed release date or officially announced cast. Charles Melton is reportedly in final talks to portray Kakashi Hatake, but this has not been confirmed by the studio.
The producing team is set, with Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions joining Cretton and Jeyun Munford of Hisako. Until Lionsgate provides further updates, fans are left to ponder the leaked changes against their affection for the original story.
