Taylor Swift Surprises Dakota Johnson on ‘SNL’ With a Fun Correction
Taylor Swift and Dakota Johnson have been openly showcasing their friendship in recent weeks. Johnson was present at Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding on July 3 at Madison Square Garden, and just six days prior to ‘Saturday Night Live,’ she honored Swift with the inaugural Artist Director Honors award at the MTV VMAs.
On that same night, Swift debuted her ‘Patient Zero’ music video, which she wrote and directed. The dark Gothic video features Johnson alongside Colin Farrell as a couple facing marital troubles, with Swift appearing as a haunting figure.
As Johnson hosted ‘Saturday Night Live’ on Saturday, fans were already buzzing with anticipation. This marked Johnson’s third time hosting, following her appearances in February 2015 and January 2024, with Turnstile making their debut as the musical guest. Coincidentally, the night also fell just before Johnson’s birthday.
Speculations about a surprise cameo were confirmed when a clip went viral on X, showcasing Taylor Swift’s unexpected appearance during Johnson’s opening monologue, adding to an already eventful week for both stars.

Johnson kicked off her monologue with jokes about her career and romantic life. She humorously referenced her 2024 superhero film ‘Madame Web,’ admitting she’s still promoting it due to its lackluster performance. She also joked about her two high-profile breakups with musicians since her last hosting stint, mentioning Chris Martin and Role Model, and quipped that she was on the lookout for a third.
Additionally, she teased her upcoming thriller ‘Verity,’ which stars her alongside Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, joking about sharing a kiss with Hathaway in the film. ‘Verity’ reportedly had a strong opening weekend, grossing over $33 million, giving Johnson plenty to discuss.
After sharing that her friends are supportive and non-judgmental about her dating life, she introduced Swift as her therapist. Swift quickly corrected her, stating that Johnson merely shows up weekly at her house with an empty wine bottle.
Swift humorously added that Johnson flops on her couch and overshares, to which Johnson asked if that counted as therapy. They joked about how their evenings typically end with a sleepover, but Swift clarified that it actually concludes with a Pedialyte and a ride home from her security team, while also celebrating Johnson’s birthday.
The monologue included a playful nod to Swift’s husband, with Johnson joking that her dating musicians serves as a public service, saving women money on Zoloft, while mentioning England, parts of Ireland, and Cleveland, which prompted a quick “Woo-woo!” from Swift. The Cleveland reference ties back to Kelce’s roots in the area.
This cameo marks Swift’s first appearance on ‘SNL’ since October 2023, when she introduced Ice Spice as the musical guest. She has hosted the show in 2009 and has made multiple appearances as a musical guest, including a monologue in 2014 and a sketch in 2015.
Johnson also has her own history with Swift on the show. During her January 2024 monologue, she showcased a photo from the show’s 40th anniversary special, zooming in on Swift.
This monologue follows a series of high-profile moments for Swift, who hinted at her ‘SNL’ appearance weeks earlier by joining Mariska Hargitay in a pre-taped parody of ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ at the Emmys.
Swift’s music has also been making waves. ‘Patient Zero,’ the single from ‘The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,’ broke a Spotify record following its surprise release. With the VMAs, the music video, and now ‘SNL,’ the collaboration between Swift and Johnson has been hard to overlook.
This cameo resonates because their friendship is genuine, and the audience’s enthusiastic reaction made that abundantly clear.
