David Ellison’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Set Visit Reportedly Won Paramount Over on DC’s Plan
DC Studios has found itself in a unique position recently, balancing a growing roster of superhero projects with a corporate takeover that could alter its trajectory. Paramount’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery was announced on February 27 and is anticipated to finalize on Tuesday. David Ellison’s visit to the ‘Man of Tomorrow’ set has become a pivotal moment in understanding how DC integrates into this new landscape.
The merged entity will operate under the Skydance banner, reviving the production company Ellison established in 2006. He has enlisted Paramount Pictures co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein to oversee the film divisions, while current Warner Bros. film executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are expected to exit. This situation has left James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-heads of DC Studios, in a precarious position.
Recently, a new detail emerged. Bloomberg reported that Ellison visited the Atlanta set of the Superman sequel earlier this year, where Gunn and Safran presented DC’s decade-long plan and strategy to Paramount’s leadership. Ellison expressed his support for that vision during their discussions. Additional reports describe this plan as a strategy to rejuvenate the DC brand, with Gunn and Safran expected to transition to Paramount following the deal’s completion.
This attention is understandable, as it clarifies DC’s current standing and why fans are closely monitoring the merger. Instead of waiting for a restructuring to dictate their future, Gunn and Safran proactively made their case in person on the set of their upcoming major project.
According to Deadline, the duo will continue to lead DC Studios’ film, television, and comics operations post-merger. Reports indicate that Ellison has requested they maintain their roles four years after their initial appointments. Bleeding Cool noted that Ellison met with them on a Thursday before the merger’s closing, and the conversation was positive, emphasizing the message to keep up their current efforts.
Their contracts are set to expire in 2027, providing a built-in checkpoint for this arrangement. This timeline makes the upcoming year of releases particularly significant.
‘Man of Tomorrow’ is scheduled to premiere on July 9, 2027, featuring David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, who faces off against Brainiac. Rachel Brosnahan and Skyler Gisondo are also returning, with filming having concluded earlier this year.
Initial industry reactions have been optimistic. Journalist Jeff Sneider mentioned on ‘The Hot Mic’ podcast that he has received positive feedback internally, although he did not provide specifics. However, one outlet cautioned that if the sequel underperforms at the box office, Ellison might reconsider his support.
DC Studios’ track record has been mixed. While ‘Superman’ and ‘Lanterns’ have performed well, ‘Supergirl’ fell short both critically and commercially. On the television front, ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Creature Commandos’ have garnered audiences.
Next on the slate is ‘Clayface’, set to release on October 23, with projections estimating an opening between $23 million and $33 million. This will serve as the first significant test for the DC brand under new ownership.
Many details remain unresolved. It is still uncertain whether DC Studios will report directly to Goldberg and Greenstein or maintain a closer connection to Ellison. Sources have indicated that DC Comics could be encouraged to develop more titles linked to the broader company portfolio, although the core operation is expected to remain distinct.
Ellison reportedly aims for the combined studios to release 30 films in theaters annually, potentially allowing DC to broaden its slate. This volume would also increase the stakes for each individual release. For now, the key takeaway is clear: the individuals responsible for the current DC slate seem to have successfully convinced the financier.
