Few spinoffs have had to tie up as many loose ends as ‘Marshals’ did upon its return to CBS. The premiere episode resolves nearly every cliffhanger within an hour, resulting in a significant cost to Kayce Dutton.

The Season 1 finale aired on May 24, and the new season kicked off on October 4 with the episode titled “All Hat No Cattle.” This quick turnaround follows a show that averaged 19.3 million multiplatform viewers per episode during its first season, making it the #1 new show of the year.

Season 1 concluded with Tate departing for a bass fishing trip with Tom Weaver, which the premiere reveals was actually a kidnapping. The episode ends with Dolly Weaver dead, Tate rescued, and Kayce left with a victory that he cannot celebrate.

While on a date with Tom’s daughter Dolly, a lawyer arrives at East Camp to inform Kayce that Tate is being held hostage until he agrees to sell his land. In true Dutton fashion, Kayce kills the lawyer and the armed men accompanying him, subsequently taking Dolly hostage.

Dolly insists she was not involved and proves her innocence by helping Kayce arrange an exchange on Tom’s land in Wyoming. Kayce signs the necessary papers, but Tom reveals his true intentions: he never planned to let father and son escape. His plan was to kill Tate and make it appear as an accident before killing Kayce under the guise of self-defense.

The premiere also addresses another major question from last season: Belle and Cal survive the ambush with only minor injuries.

Kayce manages to escape as Weaver’s men attack, just as the Marshals arrive. Tragically, Dolly Weaver dies when her father Tom crashes the vehicle they are using to flee the Marshals, while Tom survives. Kayce ultimately decides to leave Tom alive with his grief.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut told TheWrap that Tom needed to face the ultimate consequence, stating that watching his daughter die was “the worst punishment that we could give to him.” Hudnut also mentioned that this episode was the hardest to write, as the writers found themselves in a tight spot.

Not all viewers are convinced. One reviewer expressed concern that Kayce losing another woman he cares about could become a troubling narrative pattern.

The episode is packed with action, featuring a river fight, a horse chase, and a helicopter. Kayce kills Tom’s henchman Jeb and rescues Tate, but his composure finally shatters when he discovers a photograph of his late wife Monica with their son.

Luke Grimes shared with Collider that the river fight was the most challenging scene to film, describing Kayce as “just a ball of trauma.”

Hudnut has indicated that this season will focus on Kayce’s son turning 18 and becoming a man, with Tate reacting to his near-death experience in ways that will alarm Kayce.

The episode concludes with two smaller moments. Instead of returning to Washington, Andrea decides to stay with the team, having never experienced teammates who fight for one another like these marshals do.

Belle insists on accompanying Cal to his oncology appointment in Salt Lake City, and the episode ends with Cal carefully tending to her injuries. Their feelings for each other remain evident after the kiss in Season 1.

Reviews have been mixed. A critic from Collider praised the swift resolution of the cliffhanger, leaving room for new storylines. In contrast, Screen Rant noted that the episode serves as a reminder of Kayce’s lethal nature, though the ending leaves untapped storytelling potential.

Fans hoping for a ‘Dutton Ranch’ crossover were left disappointed. SlashFilm pointed out that Kayce travels to Wyoming without the assistance of his ‘Yellowstone’ alumni. With the season set to consist of 20 episodes, there is ample opportunity for the fallout to unfold.
