‘Lanterns’ Co-Creator Confirms Next Chapter Is in Development But There’s a Catch
One of the standout features of the DCU is the distinctiveness of each project. ‘Creature Commandos’ offers an animated ensemble reminiscent of the Suicide Squad, while ‘Peacemaker’ dives into a character-driven sci-fi narrative focused on mental health. ‘Superman’ serves as a nostalgic nod to the golden age of comics, and ‘Supergirl’ takes viewers on a thrilling space opera adventure. With the first season of ‘Lanterns’ now complete, the anticipation for a potential second season is the next big question for fans.
The HBO series, inspired by ‘True Detective’, debuted on August 16 and concluded its eight-episode run on October 4. Season 1 wrapped up its storyline with John Stewart solving the mystery surrounding Hal Jordan’s murder and embracing his role as Earth’s Green Lantern, despite Guy Gardner officially holding the title and John utilizing an unauthorized lantern battery created by Sinestro.
Co-creator Damon Lindelof has confirmed that a second season is in the works. In a conversation with Collider’s Steve Weintraub about the finale, he mentioned that Season 2 is in the early development stages, although he will not be returning for it. He expressed uncertainty about the direction of the new story but stated regarding Hal’s continuation after his death, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” as reported by Collider.
The writers’ room has been active since before the show premiered, with showrunner Chris Mundy collaborating with Christopher Cantwell as co-showrunner. Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, and Vanessa Baden Kelly are also part of the writing team, with Baden Kelly being the only returning writer from Season 1 alongside Mundy.
Both Lindelof and fellow co-creator Tom King will not participate in the new season, as they are occupied with their respective new series, ‘The Chain’ and ‘Mister Miracle’. Lindelof mentioned at the premiere that the first season was designed as a self-contained mystery, adding in an interview with Screen Rant that “there’s a lot of runway to launch into future seasons.”
Despite the ongoing development, ‘Lanterns’ has not yet received formal renewal. Puck reported that the current efforts are limited to pitch pages, and a renewal is not expected soon, although HBO executives are hopeful about the show’s continuation.
This skepticism is not unfounded. HBO head Casey Bloys informed Deadline that there is no active development at DC beyond ‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’. Fans have also noted James Gunn’s confirmation on Threads that the finale is a season finale rather than a series finale, though this does not equate to an official renewal.

On paper, the case for renewal appears strong. According to Variety, ‘Lanterns’ averaged nearly 19 million viewers per episode globally, with over 12 million in the US. The penultimate episode attracted 7 million US viewers within its first three days.
However, comparisons are not always favorable. One outlet pointed out that the season is averaging lower than ‘The Penguin’, which did not receive a second season. Additionally, Forbes estimated that a second season might not arrive until between August and December 2028.

The finale features John taking flight with his own Green Lantern oath, setting the stage for his next appearance in next year’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’. Lindelof even expressed interest in seeing his ‘Watchmen’ star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II involved if a second season comes to fruition.
For now, development continues quietly behind the scenes as fans await HBO’s decision. Reviews have generally been positive, although one critic found the finale’s twists to be predictable and noted that Sinestro was underutilized.
