Portraying a real individual is one challenge, but encountering them on the red carpet is an entirely different experience. Biopics and dramas based on true stories often reserve their most impactful moments for premiere nights, where the cast finally meets the people they have been depicting.

‘The Social Reckoning’ marks Aaron Sorkin’s return to the Facebook narrative. This film serves as a companion piece to ‘The Social Network’, which premiered 16 years ago, dramatizing the 2021 Facebook leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen and journalist Jeff Horwitz.

During the film’s New York premiere on October 4, this real-life encounter unfolded in front of the cameras. A video shared by Variety showcased stars Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White posing alongside Haugen and Horwitz, the individuals they portray. The clip quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of views on X within hours.

Madison dazzled in a floor-length silver gown, while White opted for a navy suit. Horwitz sported a grey suit, and Haugen wore a white top paired with a black skirt.

The U.S. premiere took place at the Regal Union Square, following earlier screenings in London and Paris. Sorkin and much of the cast, including Jeremy Strong, Wunmi Mosaku, and Betty Gilpin, were present at the New York event.

Madison portrays Haugen, a young engineer at Facebook, while White plays Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter she recruits to expose the social network’s closely guarded secrets. Strong steps into the role of Mark Zuckerberg, previously portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg in ‘The Social Network’. The cast also features Billy Magnussen and Bill Burr.

Haugen leaked thousands of internal Facebook documents to the Journal, which sparked the 2021 investigation known as the Facebook Files. This series of reports claimed that the company prioritized profits over user safety and concealed its research from both investors and the public.

Sorkin, who won an Oscar for his writing on ‘The Social Network’, now takes on the roles of both writer and director, succeeding David Fincher. The original film grossed over $226 million worldwide in 2010 and received eight Oscar nominations, winning three.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Sorkin expressed initial hesitation about returning to this narrative, fearing a sequel might not measure up. However, meeting Haugen and Horwitz changed his perspective. The film is intended as a companion piece rather than a direct sequel.

This role marks Madison’s first project since her Oscar win for ‘Anora’. She has mentioned that portraying Haugen required what she describes as an “intellectual transformation,” emphasizing the importance of capturing Haugen’s mindset and emotional restraint over physical likeness.

This makes their red carpet pairing particularly intriguing. Madison has openly acknowledged that she does not physically resemble the whistleblower, providing fans with a unique opportunity to compare the actress with the real person side by side.

The film is set to hit theaters on October 9, distributed by Columbia Pictures. It carries an R rating and has a runtime of 1 hour and 52 minutes.

Early footage, including the trailer, begins with a scene of Haugen conversing with Horwitz, setting the stage for a gripping narrative about the repercussions of a global whistleblower case. With the premiere tour now concluded, audiences are eager to see how Sorkin’s return to the Facebook saga unfolds.
