‘FBI‘ Season 9 is set to premiere on Monday, October 5, at 8 PM ET/PT on CBS, marking a significant shift in the series as it introduces one of the most notable changes in its history. Since its debut on September 25, 2018, this fresh direction is a big deal for dedicated fans of the Dick Wolf drama.

At the heart of this season is OA’s undercover mission, which disrupts one of network television’s most reliable partnerships. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming season, including the release date, plot details, cast, and trailer.

The new season will air on CBS and be available for streaming on Paramount+. Subscribers to Paramount+ Premium can watch live and on demand, while Essential subscribers will have access to episodes the day after they air.

Additionally, there’s a notable scheduling change: ‘FBI’ will now air at 8 PM on Mondays, an hour earlier than its previous slot, right before ‘CIA’ Season 2 at 9 PM. This creates a two-hour block of interconnected Dick Wolf dramas.

This season is set to consist of 22 episodes, allowing plenty of time for the undercover storyline to unfold. CBS had previously renewed the show for this season as part of a multi-season renewal announced in 2024, so its return was never in question.

Picking up from a dramatic season finale, the story resumes after OA is seemingly fired by Assistant Director in Charge Lawrence Green for protesting a cover-up regarding a virus outbreak. However, this firing was a ruse orchestrated by Maggie Bell and Isobel Castille to place OA within Anna Vorpe’s inner circle.

The season premiere, titled “Rendition,” follows the team as they investigate the murder of a young traveler who witnessed an execution related to a top-secret government project. OA’s undercover assignment will span more than one episode, presenting challenges as he navigates his new role without becoming too involved in the world he has infiltrated.

Showrunner Mike Weiss has cautioned viewers to expect a departure from the norm. He confirmed to TV Insider that Zeeko Zaki is not leaving the show, but viewers might see OA in various new settings at the start of the season.

The main cast remains largely unchanged, featuring Missy Peregrym, Zeeko Zaki, Jeremy Sisto, Alana De La Garza, John Boyd, and Juliana Aiden Martinez. Sisto’s Jubal Valentine will continue to coordinate investigations from the team’s headquarters at 26 Fed.

One of the most talked-about newcomers is Maggie’s new partner, Isaiah Green, played by Roland Buck III, known for his role in ‘Chicago Med.’ Maggie faces challenges in bonding with him as OA adapts to his new role, which is expected to create some tension in a series that has heavily relied on its central duo.

Zaki has expressed enthusiasm about the changes, stating he is eager to explore something different while also looking forward to reuniting with the team. Boyd’s Stuart Scola is also set to appear in the ‘CIA’ Season 2 premiere on the same night, indicating a close connection between the two shows this year.

The trailer for the new season emphasizes danger, with Maggie noting that the opposing team was well-prepared and aware of their weaknesses, prompting Isobel to question their identity. This sets the stage for heightened tension in the opening episodes.

The most striking moment in the trailer hints at a twist where Maggie encounters one of the opposing team members, who is revealed to be OA. However, it’s worth noting that the trailer may have been edited to create this impression, so fans should approach this moment with caution.

The premiere also serves as a crossover event, featuring ‘CIA’ Deputy Chief of Station Nikki Reynard, portrayed by Necar Zadegan, in the ‘FBI’ premiere. While the two shows will present separate episodes, the cases and characters remain interconnected. With OA leading a double life and Maggie relying on a new partner, will Isaiah Green be able to fill the void, or will the anticipated reunion of Maggie and OA take center stage when it occurs?
