Teyonah Parris has established herself as a versatile talent, seamlessly transitioning from prestigious television to Marvel blockbusters and indie films. Her latest venture is an action comedy centered around one of the most iconic toy brands in the world.

‘Matchbox: The Movie‘ is a collaboration between Apple Original Films, Skydance Media, and Mattel Studios, and it has been making waves with red carpet events across two continents. The cast kicked off the festivities with a special screening in Mexico City on October 1, before heading to New York for the world premiere.

The New York premiere took place on Monday, October 5, at the AMC Lincoln Square Theater, where Parris stood out among the attendees. Photos captured by Getty and shared by Deadline show her radiating confidence on the carpet in a stunning strapless black midi dress adorned with a shimmering silver diamond lattice pattern.

The dress featured a sleek, fitted silhouette that allowed the dazzling pattern to take center stage. Parris completed her look with strappy black heels and voluminous curls, striking a bold pose with one hand on her hip in front of the film’s silver step-and-repeat.

This isn’t the first time Parris has made a statement on the red carpet. She previously wowed in a Gaurav Gupta ensemble at the LA premiere of ‘They Cloned Tyrone.’

In ‘Matchbox: The Movie,’ Parris portrays Charmaine, part of a group of childhood friends whose lives are turned upside down when their long-lost leader, an undercover CIA agent named Sean (played by John Cena), unexpectedly returns to their small town. This reunion thrusts them into a chaotic international adventure to save the world.

Jessica Biel plays Aimee, while Sam Richardson takes on the role of Crosby and Arturo Castro plays Ted. Parris joined the cast in late 2024 alongside Richardson and Castro.

The film also features Corey Stoll as Mosier, Bill Camp as Smalley, Danai Gurira as Helen, and Golshifteh Farahani as Robbie. Daniel Bernhardt and Randeep Hooda round out the cast as Falko and Mustafa.

The film’s action sequences brought the cast closer together. In a joint interview with E! News, Parris shared a memorable moment of standing by a chain bridge with her co-stars as Cena prepared for an impressive stunt. After he successfully completed a daring run up the bridge and jumped onto a helicopter, the excitement among the cast and crew was palpable.

In the same interview, Biel mentioned that her newfound driving skills from the film have earned her some cool-mom points with her children.

For many viewers, Parris is best recognized for her role as the adult Monica Rambeau in ‘WandaVision’ and ‘The Marvels.’ She also had a recurring role as Dawn Chambers on ‘Mad Men’ and starred in the 2014 indie hit ‘Dear White People,’ after studying at Juilliard.

‘Matchbox’ marks a fun, adventure-filled shift for Parris, placing her in a comedy-heavy ensemble. Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for the ‘Extraction’ films, the screenplay is penned by David Coggeshall, who has credits including ‘The Family Plan.’

‘Matchbox: The Movie’ will be available for global streaming on Apple TV starting Friday, October 9. The film has a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes and is rated PG-13 for action sequences, violence, and language.

With the premiere behind them and the film just days away from streaming, the cast’s red carpet appearances have heightened anticipation. If Parris’s dazzling entrance is any indication, the cast is ready to shine in the spotlight.
