‘Last Seen’ Episode 6 Finale Recap & Ending Explained: Sarah’s Choice Leaves Ian Heartbroken
This year, few streaming thrillers have posed as uncomfortable a question as the one at the center of ‘Last Seen’. The Apple TV drama has concluded its narrative, and the finale has sparked debates among fans about whether any character truly achieved their desires. It’s an ending that deliberately avoids providing easy resolutions.
The series debuted globally on September 9 with a double episode release, followed by weekly installments. This Australian thriller, adapted by Kris Mrksa from Ryan David Jahn’s novel ‘The Dispatcher’, features Christian Schwochow as director and executive producer. Notably, it marks Apple TV’s first original scripted series entirely set and filmed in Australia.
The plot revolves around Ian Ridley (Patrick Brammall), a former detective turned police dispatcher whose daughter Maggie disappeared 11 years prior. When a distress call from a teenage girl comes through, Ian becomes convinced it is his daughter. She is alive, having been taken as a child by Henry (Brendan Cowell), who raised her with his wife Jenna (Maxine Peake) as Sarah, the daughter they lost.
The finale, titled “The Choice,” begins with Henry out of options and Jenna on the brink of death. He promises Sarah (Chloe Jean Lourdes) answers once they reach the compound controlled by his father. Meanwhile, Ian has taken Donald (Daniel Henshall) at gunpoint, forcing him to guide the way.
During their journey, Donald reveals his past and his connection to Jenna, finally disclosing their destination. Ian then ventures off alone, injured but resolute in his quest to reclaim his daughter. Detective Pena (Zahra Newman) is also closing in, having figured out Henry’s whereabouts.
The healing Henry promised never materializes. Upon their arrival, Jenna has already passed away, leaving Sarah in anguish and demanding answers. Henry turns to his father and the few armed men remaining at the compound to fend off Ian.
In a dramatic moment, Sarah escapes and rushes to Ian, saving him from a bullet. When Henry’s father continues the pursuit, Henry shoots him to protect Sarah, and Ian seizes Henry, holding him at gunpoint.
This pivotal moment aligns with the finale’s title. Sarah intervenes, expressing her inability to lose her father, who has become Henry to her. Ian lowers his weapon, but the emotional rejection hits harder than any bullet.
Cowell has indicated that the resolution lies with Sarah herself. “I think the ending has to do with what she wants,” he stated in an interview with TV Fanatic. One recap writer interprets this as Sarah finding happiness in her tranquil rural life, suggesting that Ian’s desperate search only complicates matters.

Henry’s narrative does not conclude with a tidy escape. As he and Sarah attempt to leave, police are waiting. Sarah suggests surrendering, but Henry grabs his rifle and exits the car, opting for suicide by cop in her presence.
Sarah is then reunited with Deb (Jessica Wren) and Dean (Tobias Muhafidin). Their reunion is awkward, yet they begin to navigate their new family dynamic. Ian is left with a strained relationship with both Sarah and Deb, but he finds a semblance of peace in knowing they are safe.
Not in the traditional sense. One critic noted that the finale avoids a clear tragic or uplifting conclusion, instead ending on the question of what lies ahead. This aligns with how the cast discussed the show prior to its release.
Brammall promised a departure from typical thriller resolutions. In a conversation with The A.V. Club, he expressed that viewers would encounter “an unexpected ending,” one that offers the possibility of healing rather than a neat conclusion. In ‘Last Seen’, the act of finding someone and bringing them back proves to be two very distinct experiences.
