‘Slow Horses’ Season 6 Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained: JK Coe’s Death and Sid’s Danger
Few spy dramas manage to blend humor and tension as effectively as ‘Slow Horses’. This week’s episode took that balance to new heights, necessitating a thorough recap and ending explanation. If you haven’t yet watched “Lost and Found”, consider this your spoiler alert.
The Apple TV series draws from Mick Herron’s ‘Slough House’ novels, with the current season inspired by ‘Joe Country’ and ‘Slough House’. It debuted on September 16, with new episodes released weekly until October 21. This season also features comedian Lenny Rush joining the ensemble.
The plot this time is straightforward: the exiled spies of Slough House are under threat. Gary Oldman, portraying Jackson Lamb, shared with TV Insider that he found the storyline compelling because “the horses were being targeted.” This episode starkly illustrates the high stakes involved in that pursuit.
The story resumes with River (Jack Lowden), Sid (Olivia Cooke), and Coe (Tom Brooke) searching for a phone so Sid can reach Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas). River is vocally opposed to the idea. After escaping from the bowling alley, the trio heads to a shopping center, hoping the crowd will provide some cover.
However, their safety is short-lived. The assassins, Jim and Jane, track them down, forcing the group to split up. The scene is charged with tension, setting the stage for the episode’s significant fallout.
While in the arcade, Coe spots the killers and follows Jim into the men’s room. What ensues is an unexpectedly cordial exchange between two seemingly similar individuals, with Coe quickly deducing that Jim is part of the Russian military. He even suggests, “I think you’ve got the wrong list,” hinting at a possible case of mistaken identity in their hunt.
The ensuing confrontation occurs off-screen, culminating in a knife fight that leads to Coe’s tragic demise. River arrives too late, discovering Coe lifeless against the wall.
Outside, River notices Coe’s car speeding away, realizing that Sid has been captured. By the episode’s conclusion, Sid is in the clutches of Jim and Jane, leaving River without any means of assistance, transportation, or communication.
The more pressing issue is Sid’s decision to trust Diana, which may prove to be the worst choice of the episode. River had warned her of the First Desk’s capabilities, and the unfolding plot validates his concerns.

The call Sid intended to make revolves around Vassily Rasnakov, Russia’s First Desk, who is enraged about a hit on Russian soil and demands Sid’s surrender. Diana hypothetically considers trading Sid for the cessation of the assassins targeting other agents on the list, all without informing Lamb or anyone else in authority.
Damien Cantor is also involved, and a visit to Diana’s residence suggests he is orchestrating a larger scheme. The situation paints a picture of a spymaster under pressure from multiple fronts, raising the question of whether the Slow Horses are being eliminated due to a case of mistaken identity.
Not everyone will make it out of Slough House alive.

Amidst the chaos, the episode also delivers some of its most humorous moments. Lamb, Roddy Ho, and Reece Nesmith visit the apartment of the recently dismissed Emma Flyte, seeking assistance. They arrange a meeting using a number from Reece’s father’s burner phone.
At the meeting, Lamb is unfazed to see Frank Harkness sitting across from him. He creates a public distraction that allows him and Reece to escape in Flyte’s car. They then follow Frank to a restaurant, where Flyte spots him dining with Cantor, a clue that Lamb will undoubtedly pursue.
The episode concludes with the Slow Horses in disarray. With Coe gone, Sid captured, and Diana making a deal that could jeopardize her team, the stakes have never been higher. One critic described it as a tragic, hilarious, nail-biting episode, while raising questions about Sid’s honesty.
With only a few episodes remaining, River must now embark on a mission to rescue someone who may be hiding crucial information.
