‘Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir’ Live-Action TV Series Announced
Few animated superhero franchises have made as significant an impact as ‘Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir’. What started as a Parisian adventure featuring two teenagers with secret identities has evolved into a worldwide phenomenon, encompassing TV seasons, films, merchandise, and live events. For years, fans have wondered what a real-life Ladybug would look like.
The concept of a live-action adaptation isn’t new. Plans have been in the works for some time, including a 2018 agreement where Skydance Media and ZAG obtained the rights for live-action film and television, with expectations for a 2020 release. However, that never came to fruition, leaving fans eagerly waiting.
Now, a live-action ‘Miraculous’ series is officially on the way. This marks the first time the beloved animated superhero series will transition to live-action television, with the adaptation being penned by Emme Hoy, who served as a writer and co-executive producer for season 2 of the thriller ‘Sweetpea’ on Sky and Starz. The project is co-developed and co-produced by Mediawan companies, See-Saw Films and Miraculous Corp.
See-Saw Films, known for ‘Slow Horses’ and ‘Heartstopper’, brings a strong reputation for character-driven narratives to the table. Miraculous Corp, a joint venture between Mediawan and ZAG established in 2024, is also involved. Executive producers include See-Saw’s Maria Nicholson, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Simon Gillis, and Ben Irving, alongside Hoy, with Nicky Earnshaw co-producing.
Heath Kenny, the chief content officer at Miraculous Corp, commended See-Saw and Hoy for their knack for crafting ambitious, emotionally resonant stories that have global appeal. This partnership indicates the studio’s intent to create a version that attracts more than just a young audience. Whether this will result in a darker or more mature tone remains to be seen.
Hoy’s previous work provides some insight into the direction of the series. Besides ‘Sweetpea’, a darkly comedic thriller featuring Ella Purnell set to return to Sky in November and Starz in early 2027, she has also written several episodes for the BBC’s upcoming espionage series ‘Honey’. These projects suggest a focus on sharp, character-driven storytelling.
This approach aligns well with a franchise centered around secret identities and unexpressed emotions. The original narrative follows Marinette and Adrien, who transform into Ladybug and Cat Noir to defend Paris from the villain Hawk Moth and his akumas. At its heart lies a romance where neither hero is aware of the other’s true identity.
The timing of this announcement is fitting given the franchise’s growth. The series has amassed over 37 billion views on YouTube, as reported in 2024, and its animated film, ‘Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie’, topped the box office in France and Germany before being made available on Netflix. Additionally, Disney has acquired later seasons of the series.
Earlier this year, Miraculous Corp also revealed plans for a live stage show set to debut globally in 2027, featuring acrobatics, aerial choreography, and puppetry. The live-action series represents another significant step in transforming the cartoon into a multi-platform empire, keeping the brand relevant for fans who grew up with the animated series.
Many key details remain undisclosed. The announcement does not specify who will portray Marinette and Adrien, which streaming platform or network will air the show, or when it might premiere. Fans are likely to speculate about casting in the coming months, especially considering the beloved status of both characters.
There are also creative challenges to consider. Successfully translating Ladybug’s transformations, the magical companions of the heroes, and the expansive Parisian backdrop into live action will be a significant test for the production. The success of other adaptations from animation to live action may provide valuable insights, but each property presents unique challenges.
For long-time fans, this news marks a significant milestone. The animated series has been on air since 2015, and its dedicated audience has been clamoring for a live-action adaptation for years. With a respected producer, an experienced writer, and a franchise at its commercial peak, this attempt appears to have a stronger foundation than previous efforts.
Nonetheless, expectations will be high. Ladybug and Cat Noir are characterized by their style, humor, and heart, and capturing that essence in a real-world context will be a formidable task. Fans will be closely watching for the first casting announcements.
