‘Lanterns’ Finale Breaks Audience Record Yet HBO Hasn’t Renewed for Season 2
Superhero television has faced its share of challenges in recent years, with many shows struggling to maintain a consistent audience. HBO and DC Studios took a bold step with ‘Lanterns’, opting for a grounded, True Detective-style mystery instead of a cosmic adventure. This decision raised questions about whether viewers would engage with the series.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, ‘Lanterns’ premiered on August 16 and quickly garnered critical acclaim, achieving Rotten Tomatoes scores exceeding 90% from critics. While audience reactions fluctuated, particularly after some backlash surrounding the third episode, viewership continued to rise.
The numbers have peaked at a pivotal moment. According to Deadline, the ‘Lanterns’ season finale attracted 10.5 million global viewers within its first three days, setting a new record for the series. The episode, which aired on October 4, saw a 13% increase in global viewership compared to the premiere, with 7.2 million viewers in the U.S. alone.
This record-breaking finale is part of a consistent trend. The premiere attracted 9.3 million global viewers and 6.6 million in the U.S. during its initial three days, with the audience steadily increasing since then. In the U.S., the finale’s viewership rose by 9% compared to the premiere, while the penultimate episode had already reached 7 million viewers.
Even more remarkable is the continued growth of the premiere episode itself. HBO reports that the first episode is nearing 30 million viewers as audiences catch up. Throughout its eight-episode run, ‘Lanterns’ is averaging 19.3 million viewers globally, placing it among the top five series launches in HBO’s history.
HBO highlighted that the ‘Lanterns’ premiere outperformed the openings of several major series, including ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’, ‘The Penguin’, and ‘True Detective: Night Country’. This comparison provides context for the promising trajectory of ‘Lanterns’.
It’s important to note that these figures represent multi-day and cumulative viewing rather than just a single night. HBO has indicated that premiere-night viewing typically accounts for only a small fraction of a show’s eventual audience. Nevertheless, the consistent upward trend suggests strong word-of-mouth support.

The series follows rookie John Stewart, portrayed by Aaron Pierre, and veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, as they investigate a murder in the heart of America. The case evolves into a larger conspiracy with cosmic implications. The cast also features Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Nathan Fillion.
The finale, titled ‘Dirt and Stars’, resolved the season’s central mystery and provided an emotional farewell for its two leads. Critics described it as a subtle yet promising conclusion, praising the performances of Chandler, Pierre, and Macdonald. Chandler remarked that the final scene with Pierre deeply affected him when he viewed it.
Despite the impressive viewership numbers, ‘Lanterns’ has not yet received a renewal. Deadline reports that a second season is still pending, with Mundy reportedly working on scripts for a follow-up while HBO deliberates. Both Chandler and Pierre have expressed pride in the project and optimism for its future, though they remain cautious until an official announcement is made.
Meanwhile, the finale sets the stage for Pierre’s John Stewart to appear in ‘Man of Tomorrow’, the upcoming ‘Superman’ sequel set to release in summer 2027. This development suggests that the character will have a future in the broader DC Universe, regardless of the show’s fate on HBO, indicating that DC Studios views Stewart as a pivotal figure moving forward.

For DC Studios, the timing is crucial. The company is working to regain momentum for its rebooted universe, and a successful series on HBO strengthens the case for their new direction. A strong finale audience also provides HBO with a compelling argument for renewing the show.
Of course, ratings are not the sole factor, and the platform will consider costs, scheduling, and creative plans. However, when a series consistently grows its audience, concludes on its highest note, and continues to attract viewers long after its premiere, it becomes difficult to overlook. Fans are already making their voices heard.
