‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Confession: Dakota Johnson Reveals Awkward Role Prep
Few talk-show formats challenge evasive celebrities quite like ‘Hot Ones Versus‘. The rules are straightforward and unforgiving: answer an awkward question honestly, or face the consequences of a punishingly spicy chicken wing. For stars promoting a new film, this often leads to viral moments.
In this episode, Dakota Johnson faced off against her co-star Josh Hartnett, with Anne Hathaway as the referee. Contestants had to either answer truthfully or eat the wings, with the one consuming the most wings deemed the loser. Topics ranged from their memories of each other’s projects to their most embarrassing role preparations and their knowledge of classic thrillers.
During the segment on embarrassing role preparation, Johnson shared a confession that has everyone buzzing. When asked if she would eat one of the spicy wings or reveal an embarrassing preparation story, she opted for honesty, admitting that she grew out her body hair for her role in the first ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ film. She explained that her character, Anastasia Steele, was supposed to have never waxed, and she firmly declined the wing, with the teaser’s caption featuring a more colorful version of her refusal.
This revelation is particularly striking as it contrasts with how the film’s intimate scenes were discussed back in 2015. At that time, Johnson reportedly stated that waxing was more painful than the spanking scenes, claiming she underwent more waxing than any woman should. This new admission feels like a surprising twist on a decade-old story.
Reports indicate that earlier accounts from the production do not entirely align. Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey mentioned that Johnson wore a protective patch, and grooming details were added in post-production. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson described a grooming arc that followed the book, leaving the specifics of Johnson’s preparation somewhat mysterious.
Fans had plenty to say about her candidness. Many praised her unfiltered honesty, with one calling it hilarious, while others joked about the situation. Some dismissed it, noting that the film’s digitally altered visuals had already been widely discussed.
The teaser was released on Oct. 5, just a day after Johnson celebrated her 37th birthday, and the full episode aired on Oct. 6 on First We Feast’s YouTube channel. Hathaway, an Oscar winner, hosted the episode, which teased whether Hartnett would eat a wing to avoid discussing his old looks. Hartnett reportedly chose a hot wing instead of rating his old photos.
This was not Johnson’s first experience in the hot seat. She previously participated in a full ‘Hot Ones’ interview with Sean Evans in June 2025 while promoting ‘Materialists’, where she stated she would not return. The ‘Versus’ format proved to be a chaotic departure from that experience.
All of this is part of the promotional push for ‘Verity’, the psychological thriller that premiered in U.S. theaters on Oct. 2. Directed by Michael Showalter and based on a screenplay by Nick Antosca, it adapts Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel. Amazon MGM Studios distributes it in the U.S. and Canada, while Sony Pictures Releasing International handles other markets.
In ‘Verity’, Johnson portrays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to complete the bestselling book series left unfinished by her client Verity Crawford after a mysterious accident. While at the remote Crawford estate, she discovers a manuscript that raises questions about Verity’s mental health and her connection to her published works. Hathaway plays Verity, while Hartnett plays her husband, Jeremy.
As Lowen investigates, she grapples with distinguishing fact from fiction and attraction from obsession. The film’s trailer hints at a dark, tense narrative, and the cast has embraced the promotional chaos with enthusiasm. The ‘Hot Ones Versus’ appearance aligns perfectly with this strategy, combining a spicy gimmick with a thriller that thrives on secrets.
Part of the appeal lies in how quickly the format strips away the polish. A star who appears calm on the red carpet suddenly faces the choice between enduring a punishing wing or revealing a story she’d rather keep private. Johnson’s decision to share rather than eat was both humorous and fitting for an actress known for her deadpan honesty.
This also generated the kind of social media buzz that a modern thriller craves. Whether viewers tuned in for the wings, the confession, or the movie, the clip has sparked conversations about all three.
