Michael Douglas Reveals Catherine Zeta-Jones Ultimatum in New Memoir ‘One Helluva Ride’
Every great Hollywood romance has a unique origin story, but few come with a deadline. Michael Douglas, a prominent figure in the industry for decades, has long been associated with a playboy lifestyle. His new memoir, ‘One Helluva Ride’, sheds light on the moment this reputation intersected with Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Released on Oct. 6, the book chronicles his life, from being Kirk Douglas’s son to his notable films, first marriage, infidelity, rehab, and his battle with cancer. Excerpts have been circulating, revisiting chapters of his personal life, including an admission about his affair with Kathleen Turner during the filming of ‘Romancing the Stone’.
One of the most discussed sections details the early days of his relationship with Zeta-Jones. According to the excerpts, she made her stance clear: she would only engage in a monogamous relationship and was not interested in him if he was involved with others. This left Douglas with a choice: continue his other relationships or end them to be with her.
This was a surprising demand for Douglas, who had been enjoying a different lifestyle. He mentions that the timing was particularly complex as he had recently separated from his first wife, Diandra, with their divorce finalized in 2000 after separating in 1995.
At the time, Douglas was not just dating one woman; he was seeing multiple women, each in different cities, all of whom were aware of his separation. He assumed they were also seeing other people and none had asked for a commitment.
He described this arrangement as a respectful form of non-monogamy, a concept that might raise eyebrows among some readers. However, everything changed when Zeta-Jones set her condition. According to the memoir, Douglas asked her to wait while he made some quick calls, and she was shocked to learn how many women he was involved with.
Douglas recounts that he called each woman that same day, informing them that he had met someone and could no longer see them. He noted that all of them took the news well, suggesting that the arrangement was casual. It’s important to remember that this is Douglas’s perspective, and none of the women have publicly commented on it.
The LA Times reported that Douglas described himself as a changed man after meeting Zeta-Jones and starting a family. This narrative of redemption aligns with how the couple has shared their story over the past two decades.
Their relationship progressed quickly. They met in 1998 at the Deauville American Film Festival in France, where Douglas had already admired her performance in ‘The Mask of Zorro’. He claimed he told her early on that he would be the father of her children, a statement he later affirmed as true.
They became engaged in December 1999 and tied the knot on Nov. 18, 2000, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Their son, Dylan, was born that same year, followed by daughter Carys in 2003.
However, their story isn’t without its challenges. The couple separated in 2013 but never filed for divorce, reconciling in 2014. Douglas has stated that their reunion was mutual and that they are currently in a good place.
This anecdote resonates well, providing insight into the moment a famous bachelor chose commitment, alongside the strong-willed woman who challenged him to prove it. Zeta-Jones has humorously mentioned that she has no intention of reading the book herself.
