CBS has demonstrated over the years that supernatural sitcoms can attract a significant audience, and now the creators of ‘Ghosts’ return with a fresh family comedy. ‘Eternally Yours‘ centers on a vampire family living in Seattle, and its premiere packs a lot into just half an hour. By the end of the episode, the core relationship of the show has been dramatically altered.

This series is brought to life by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, the showrunners who adapted ‘Ghosts’ for American viewers, with Trent O’Donnell directing the pilot. The show premiered on Thursday on CBS and will be available for streaming on Paramount+ the following day. Here’s a look at what unfolded in the pilot and the implications of its surprising conclusion.

Charles and Liz Blythe, portrayed by Ed Weeks and Allegra Edwards, have been married for nearly 500 years, and their romance has lost its spark. Their daughter, Emma, is also a vampire and has developed feelings for a human named Max, played by Jaren Lewison. Max, an investigator for the Social Security Administration studying psychology, finds himself in the Blythe household due to his work.

The family dynamic is quite busy. Jesse, a fitness-enthusiast vampire, is married to a human named Phyllis, played by Rose Abdoo, who remains unaware of the supernatural elements due to frequent mind wipes. Their twin sons, Henry and Mort, possess distinct abilities, with Mort’s unique skill being the ability to read the family dog’s thoughts.

The episode kicks off with Max visiting the family as part of his investigation into Jesse, who has seemingly been receiving Social Security benefits since the program’s inception. Liz seizes the chance to utilize Max’s psychology expertise and asks him to provide counseling for her and Charles. Unfortunately, the session yields little progress.

Meanwhile, Charles believes the best way to revive his marriage is to eliminate Max together. Just as things escalate, Emma intervenes, revealing to Max that her family consists of vampires. As Max attempts to leave, Liz encourages him to reconsider, reminding him that her own relationship with Charles faced challenges.

Max then asserts his desire to remain with Emma, and for a moment, it seems Charles is willing to accept this. The episode appears to be heading toward a heartwarming conclusion about love overcoming familial strife.

However, a shocking twist occurs. While honing his abilities, Mort accidentally strikes Max with a bust of Charles, resulting in Max’s death. Charles then transforms him into a vampire, integrating him into the coven.

This development seemingly resolves Charles’s primary concern, as his daughter is no longer romantically involved with a human. It also leaves Phyllis as the only human in the household. In an interview with TheWrap, Wiseman explained that the coven’s rule is “You break it, you buy it,” which clarifies why Max is welcomed into the fold, marking a significant shift for the series.

Wiseman also mentioned that the show intentionally keeps vague how long it has been since the coven last transformed someone. He added that Max’s new outlook will raise questions about the coven’s dynamics. The creators have expressed interest in a crossover with ‘Ghosts’, with Wiseman humorously suggesting that the vampires could visit the ghosts since they can leave their home.

This kind of crossover speculation adds to the show’s excitement. ‘Ghosts’ is entering its sixth season, and the creators already view the two series as part of a shared universe.

Initial reviews are mixed but show intrigue. One reviewer rated the premiere 3.5 out of 5, praising the chemistry between Weeks and Edwards while noting that the exposition can feel heavy and the tone skews more melodramatic than comedic. Another reviewer found the twist to be bold and unexpected, though they expressed concern that it might push the premise too far too quickly.

Others were less enthusiastic. One recap described the episode as fairly average and wished it had delivered more laughs, although it recognized potential in the twins’ contrasting abilities and the dog-mind-reading humor. A preview review also likened it to ‘What We Do in the Shadows’, suggesting it has a brighter network vibe.

The twist gives the series a clear trajectory. Max has transitioned from a human outsider investigating a fraud to a permanent member of the family, which introduces new tensions with Charles and the rest of the coven. It also heightens the stakes for Emma, who now has a boyfriend bound to her for eternity.

The show airs on Thursdays on CBS, with Jeff Hiller scheduled to guest star in an episode on October 22. If the pilot is any indication, this vampire family has plenty of drama left to explore.
