‘American Horror Story’ Season 13 Episodes 7 & 8 Recap and Ending Explained
Few cliffhangers in recent ‘American Horror Story’ history have hit as hard as the shocking death of Cordelia Goode. The long-anticipated Coven reunion has been building toward a climactic showdown since the season began, and the latest double feature finally delivers. Fans who spent a week questioning whether their beloved Supreme was truly gone now have their answers.
The two new episodes, titled ‘The Baddest Witch of Them All’ and ‘Hell No’, aired Thursday night on FX and are available for streaming on Hulu the following day. Together, they resolve the intense standoff with the Cortez Devils and set the stage for an even larger battle against the forces of hell. Here’s a breakdown of everything that transpired and the implications of the ending.
The first episode picks up in the aftermath of Cordelia’s murder at Miss Robichaux’s Academy, with the witches forced to confront James Patrick March’s resurrected crew of serial killers. Madison faces off against Jeffrey Dahmer and is stabbed, but Morwenna, a young witch with resurrection abilities, brings her back to life. Queenie uses her mirroring power to finish off Dahmer, and Madison incinerates his remains.
Meanwhile, Mallory utilizes her time-travel ability to send Richard Ramirez back to his old neighborhood, where an enraged mob brutally kills him. Coco, in conjunction with Queenie’s mirroring, sends the Zodiac Killer into a fatal diabetic crisis. One by one, the Cortez Devils are defeated.
Then comes the moment fans have been eagerly awaiting. Fiona Goode arrives to discover her daughter dead, and March foolishly claims responsibility, which proves to be a grave error. Fiona exacts revenge by killing him with his own men, resurrects the killers to tear him apart, and then revives Cordelia with a whispered incantation.
The second episode takes a more reflective turn, focusing on the mother-daughter reunion that provides Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson ample material to work with. Fiona recounts her time in hell, where she was left alone with her memories, and admits her shortcomings as a parent. She agrees to assist in training Cordelia to become a stronger Supreme, but only until the immediate threat is neutralized.
The witches then dissect one of the reanimated killers, discovering black goo and a serpent inside. Cordelia identifies the snake as a sigil of the devil, confirming that Satan is behind the revivals. This revelation leads them to Papa Legba, now portrayed by Orlando Jones, who guards the gates of hell.
Cordelia ventures into hell and strikes a deal. She offers to erase the knowledge of her revival spell if Legba helps them thwart the devil, and he reveals that he requires Marie Laveau, played by Angela Bassett. However, bringing Marie back necessitates another soul to take her place.

Both Fiona and Cordelia volunteer, but Cordelia argues that Fiona is the only one capable of persuading Marie. Queenie steps up instead and is sent below. Her personal hell turns out to be an endless shift at a fried chicken restaurant, where Kathy Bates returns as Delphine LaLaurie, who torments her. Queenie retaliates with her mirroring power and incinerates LaLaurie’s face.
This act of revenge is satisfying, though the grotesque nature of the sequence may be difficult for some viewers to stomach. More critically, Queenie is now trapped in hell, which leaves a significant open thread as the season progresses.
Legba successfully revives Marie Laveau, leading to immediate tension between her and Fiona. He intervenes, insisting that the witches must unite, as both white and Black magic must collaborate to defeat the devil. By the end, Fiona and Marie agree to a truce, solidifying the Coven’s unity against Mr. Nas.
The overarching narrative suggests that Mr. Nas may be Satan himself, as he has been gathering sacrificed souls to rise and conquer the world. Cordelia’s pact with Legba also looms large, since it hinges on a spell that resurrected Fiona from hell. Ben’s mysterious brand and the impending confrontation between Fiona and Constance remain unresolved.

One review commended the mother-daughter scenes and the gathering of former enemies for a larger battle, but noted that the season still leans heavily on nostalgia. It also pointed out that Legba’s requirement for Marie is never clearly articulated. Newer viewers might find the payoffs less satisfying, as much depends on understanding these characters’ backstories.
For long-time fans, however, the returns of Fiona, Marie, and Delphine feel like a victory lap. A report on the upcoming episodes even hints at another familiar face from ‘Asylum’ making an appearance, and with five installments remaining, the stakes are set to escalate.
