The new teacher on ‘Abbott Elementary’ has just begun her journey, and she’s already stirring up drama in the teachers’ lounge. The sixth season premiere introduced Katy Mixon as Elsa Hardaway, a new teacher sporting a pink tracksuit who quickly becomes Melissa’s latest rival by taking over her classroom.

The new season premiered on Wednesday, Oct. 7, and became available for streaming the following day on Hulu. Fans who caught the trailer noted that the arrival of this new teacher on ‘Abbott Elementary’ was a major talking point. Here’s everything we know about her so far.

Elsa Hardaway is portrayed by Katy Mixon, who is also known for her role in ‘American Housewife’. Now credited as Katy Mixon Greer, she played the character Katie Otto, a Connecticut mom, for five seasons on that ABC series.

The character first appeared in the season trailer. Right from her entrance, Elsa clashes with Melissa, asserting her claim by saying, “That is my chair.” When Melissa attempts to remind her of the established hierarchy and flips her hair, the newcomer mirrors the gesture, declaring that she’s not going anywhere.

The casting was confirmed for this guest-starring role, with local coverage hinting at a new teacher who seems to be in direct conflict with Melissa Schemmenti. This setup instantly creates a workplace rivalry.

Melissa is an ideal target for a challenger. As a second-grade teacher, she is characterized by her sharp tongue and tough exterior, paired with a genuine love for her students. The battle for her classroom was bound to ignite tensions.

Melissa’s ongoing conflict with the new teacher escalates after Elsa takes over Melissa’s first-floor classroom. ABC’s description of the premiere indicates that Melissa is determined to reclaim her classroom, which is a classic Melissa mission.

Things take a turn for Melissa when she discovers that Elsa has a crush on Morton, played by Jerry Minor. Noticing that the upstairs class is right across from his classroom, Elsa agrees to a classroom exchange. One outlet suggested that the chemistry between the characters was so strong that it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mixon return in the future. Additionally, Melissa has taken on a new role this year as a teachers’ union representative.

The premiere episode, titled “Jungle Classroom,” kicks off on Development Day before the school year begins. Janine’s classroom quickly becomes chaotic, filled with craft supplies, water misters, and even a fire pit that doesn’t meet safety regulations.

Behind the scenes, the cast has been hinting at exciting developments. The show has just surpassed the milestone of 100 episodes, and the cast promises that this season will feature heightened emotions, plot twists, and plenty of laughs. Director Randall Einhorn hinted that the first episode may include appearances by notable figures from Philadelphia and beyond, although he remained tight-lipped about specifics.

The premiere also addresses contemporary school life. By the end of the episode, Gregory realizes that the teacher he hired to replace him is actually an AI. This humorous twist adds to the show’s knack for finding comedy in the challenges of public education.

The most significant change this season belongs to Gregory, who has taken on the role of assistant principal while still fulfilling his teaching responsibilities. Executive producer Justin Halpern shared with TVLine that Gregory is taking this new position very seriously.

The trailer reveals that Gregory’s new role may not be smooth sailing. He faces angry parents, while Ava tracks down the superintendent on the golf course to confront him directly. Additionally, Janine’s ex, Tariq, makes a return. Gregory will now work more closely with Janelle James’ Ava, the self-absorbed principal.

With Elsa already claiming Melissa’s chair and eyeing Morton across the hall, will the new teacher on ‘Abbott Elementary’ become Melissa’s fiercest rival or an unexpected ally?
