The BFI London Film Festival has long been a platform for showcasing British talent. This year marks its 70th edition, running from October 7 to October 18, featuring 251 titles from 88 countries. The program includes 33 world premieres, with 43% of the works created by female filmmakers.

Among the world premieres is ‘In the Shadows’, a British boxing biopic directed by Anthony Wonke. The film tells the inspiring story of Ramla Ali, Britain’s first female Muslim boxing champion, with Jasmine Jobson portraying Ali and Finn Cole playing her husband, Richard.

The film’s premiere at Vue West End on Friday, October 9, attracted one of the largest crowds of the evening, providing fans with a special moment. Florence Pugh made her red carpet debut with Cole, marking a significant milestone in their relationship, which they have kept relatively private.

Although Pugh is not part of the film, she attended to show her support, and her appearance certainly drew attention. She dazzled in a lavender-and-silver corseted gown from Wiederhoeft’s Spring 2027 collection, styled by Rebecca Corbin-Murray. The gown featured a structured bodice with a sweetheart neckline and a bedazzled bust, flowing into a shimmering metallic skirt.

She opted for minimal accessories to let the dress shine, pairing it with a silver statement necklace and matching earrings that sparkled against the corset. Black nail polish added a contemporary touch, while her hair was elegantly styled with soft waves cascading around her shoulders, set against the festival’s vibrant pink backdrop.

Cole complemented her look in a classic suit and tie. Their coordinated styles were perfect for the occasion, and their first red carpet appearance together was a fitting tribute to the premiere of his film.

Pugh first hinted at her relationship in an interview with British Vogue in October 2024. While she has spoken fondly about her partner, she has generally kept their relationship out of the public eye. Just last week, the couple was seen enjoying a day out in New York City, and the London premiere marked their first official public appearance together.

The event also held personal significance. For Cole, it was a celebration of a project centered around a real-life athlete’s journey. For Pugh, it was a chance to publicly show her support.

Pugh has a long-standing connection with the festival, as her film debut, ‘The Falling’, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11, 2014. That year, she was nominated for Best British Newcomer.

She later gained acclaim for her roles in the independent drama ‘Lady Macbeth’ and the miniseries ‘The Little Drummer Girl’. In 2019, she starred in three major films, earning international recognition. Returning to the festival more than a decade after her debut signifies a full-circle moment in her career.

‘In the Shadows’ chronicles the true story of Ali, who became Britain’s first female Muslim boxing champion. Jobson stars as Ali, while Cole portrays her husband, who converts to Islam. The world premiere was one of the festival’s standout films, alongside the opening-night film ‘Elsinore’ and the closing-night film ‘The Debut’.

For audiences, this is the kind of story that thrives with a festival launch. For the cast and their guests, the premiere provided a moment to celebrate before the film’s wider release.

As the festival continues through October 18, many more premieres are on the horizon. Pugh’s lavender-and-silver gown has already become one of the most talked-about looks, and fans are eager to see if the couple will make additional public appearances together.
