Grown-up romantic dramas are increasingly rare in cinemas today, making ‘Love of Your Life’ a standout this fall. Directed by Rachel Morrison, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before launching into a staggered release that allows it to reach audiences multiple times.

Amazon MGM Studios released the film in select theaters on Wednesday, October 7, and it will be available for global streaming on Prime Video starting October 14. This week is particularly busy for Margaret Qualley, who stars in the film and has been actively promoting it.

A recent press photo has fans buzzing. In the image, Qualley leans against a wall bathed in soft window light, wearing an olive-green halter top with a subtle suede-like texture. Her dark hair cascades in glossy waves past her shoulders, and she gazes at the camera with a calm, steady expression.

The styling is elegantly simple, featuring a muted green palette, natural makeup, and a soft pink lip that highlight her features. This aesthetic aligns perfectly with a film that heavily relies on its lead performance.

In ‘Love of Your Life’, Qualley portrays Maya, a witty nurse whose unexpected meeting with Charlie, played by Gabriel Basso, ignites a sweeping romance and a future she never anticipated. When that future is abruptly altered, Maya embarks on an unexpected journey of self-discovery, learning how to love again.

The narrative follows Maya from age 26 into her mid-thirties, utilizing chapter headings to signify the passage of time. Aaron Pierre plays Felix, Patrick Schwarzenegger portrays Jason, and Catherine Keener takes on the role of Ruth, with Tamara Lawrance and Corey Johnson rounding out the cast.

Morrison, an Oscar-nominated cinematographer, makes her directorial return with ‘Love of Your Life’, following her debut with ‘The Fire Inside’ in 2024. Julia Cox penned the screenplay, while Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson serve as producers. The score is composed by Dustin O’Halloran.

The film made a significant impact at the festival, with the cast and filmmakers actively participating in promotional events. Amazon MGM hosted a special screening at the IFC Theater in New York on October 7, attended by Qualley, Pierre, Morrison, and Henderson. At 31, Qualley, an Emmy-nominated actress, is having a particularly busy year.

Critical reception has been mixed. The Hollywood Reporter described the film as a beautiful yet ultimately unconvincing exploration of grief and love. Variety noted it as a visually appealing but surface-level healing journey, while still praising Qualley’s performance for its depth and emotional honesty.

Conversely, some critics offered warmer reviews. The AV Club hailed it as a refreshingly mature romance and a character study of Maya, highlighting its unexpected narrative twists. Another outlet labeled it one of the most poignant films from this year’s TIFF, crediting a powerful supporting performance from Keener. Roger Ebert’s site, however, rated it 1.5 stars, calling it forgettable.

The film adds to a packed schedule for Qualley, who has also appeared in ‘How to Make a Killing’ and is set to star in Ridley Scott’s upcoming film ‘The Dog Stars’. She first gained recognition in a leading role opposite Demi Moore in ‘The Substance’. Her versatility across romance, thriller, and drama genres has made her one of the most closely watched actors of her generation.

Regardless of critical consensus on the film, Qualley’s performance continues to garner attention. With the Prime Video release just days away, the promotional campaign is reaching its final phase. The new photo captures a star truly in her element.
