If you’ve been eager to see Matt Damon in Ben Affleck’s new Netflix thriller, you might be waiting for a while. The reason Matt Damon is absent from ‘Animals’ isn’t due to any Hollywood feud. Initially, the plan was for Affleck to direct, Damon to star, and both to produce, but Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ interfered with those plans.

This scheduling conflict triggered a series of changes both behind and in front of the camera. Affleck ultimately took on the role himself, leading to several surprising casting decisions. Here’s the full story of how Matt Damon’s departure altered one of Netflix’s most anticipated thrillers.

Variety reported that Damon had to exit the lead role due to scheduling conflicts with Nolan’s ambitious ‘The Odyssey’. It was simply a case of two major projects vying for the same actor at the same time. Given that one of them is a Christopher Nolan film, the choice was clear.

The timing was already complicated. According to Deadline, Affleck had originally intended to shoot ‘Animals’ earlier, but production delays due to script rights issues pushed him to complete ‘The Accountant 2’ first. By the time Affleck was ready to move forward, Damon had already committed to ‘The Odyssey’ and was unable to return.

Fans hoping for a tale of a falling out will be disappointed. The reports indicate that it was merely a scheduling issue. The two friends even collaborated on the Netflix action thriller ‘The Rip’ in early 2026.

Instead of recasting the role, Affleck, who was initially set to direct only, decided to step into the lead role himself. He took over the part of Mark Kimball, which was originally intended for Damon.

Affleck couldn’t resist teasing his old friend. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he joked that Matt was busy working on another lesser film, ‘The Odyssey’. This playful banter is exactly what you’d expect from two friends who have been ribbing each other for years.

The plot of ‘Animals’ is a gripping one. It follows a mayoral candidate and his wife who must navigate a dangerous situation to save their kidnapped son, all while facing threats from the political world and beyond. The script was initially penned by Connor McIntyre and later revised by Billy Ray.

The supporting cast also helps mitigate the absence of Damon. Gillian Anderson was cast alongside Affleck, and Netflix has announced that Steven Yeun and Kerry Washington have joined the project as well.

Here’s where things get a bit awkward. Affleck had initially planned to cast his ex-wife Jennifer Garner as Damon’s on-screen wife, which would have made for an interesting Hollywood anecdote.

However, production schedule changes made it impossible for both Garner and Damon to participate, leading Affleck to recast the roles. Once Affleck decided to take on the lead, he faced the unusual situation of acting alongside his ex-wife, which Garner reportedly feared would be distracting.

The final casting choice turned out to be a strong one. Kerry Washington ultimately took on the role instead, providing audiences with a fresh pairing while allowing Affleck to avoid a potentially awkward situation.

Damon is not entirely absent from ‘Animals’. He remains involved as a producer, collaborating once again with Affleck and Dani Bernfeld through their Artists Equity studio. He co-produced the film with his wife Luciana Damon, along with Affleck, Brad Weston, Dani Bernfeld, and Collin Creighton.

This collaboration fits their long-standing partnership. The duo won an Academy Award for co-writing ‘Good Will Hunting’ in 1998, and Damon also starred in Affleck’s directorial project ‘Air’. Even with Damon off-screen, their partnership continues to thrive.

As for when you can catch ‘Animals’, it is set to premiere on Netflix on October 9, with a limited theatrical release as well. Affleck has humorously remarked that Damon will get his karma for opting for the Nolan film. Would Damon have portrayed Mark Kimball differently? And does Affleck’s performance in the role leave you satisfied with how things turned out? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
