Darth Vader vs. The Hulk in New Art for ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’ Crossover
For nearly five decades, fans have envisioned a crossover between Marvel and ‘Star Wars’. The two franchises have a rich history, dating back to April 1977 when Marvel published the first ‘Star Wars’ comic just weeks before the original film premiered. Until this year, however, their characters had never crossed paths in the comics.
That all changed in August when Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing unveiled ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’, marking the first official crossover between these iconic worlds. This five-issue limited series is set to launch in January 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of ‘Star Wars’, and has quickly become one of the most discussed comic announcements of the year.
Recently released artwork by Jerome Opeña showcases one of the dream matchups fans have long anticipated. The image depicts Darth Vader, lightsaber ignited, standing firm against the Hulk, who charges at him beneath an orange sky filled with TIE fighters and X-wings.
The artwork perfectly captures the epic scale of this confrontation. While Vader appears dwarfed by the Hulk’s massive form, he stands resolute, embodying the thrilling essence of such a crossover.

Written by Kevin Smith and illustrated by David Marquez, the series is set within Marvel’s main continuity, Earth-616. The story kicks off when a reality-altering spell brings the events of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ to life on Earth, allowing Marvel’s heroes to witness the saga unfold.
In this epic narrative, the Avengers and Spider-Man join forces with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca, while Doctor Doom allies himself with Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire. The cover art released alongside the announcement also features notable characters like Thanos, Ultron, Grand Moff Tarkin, Greedo, and Venom.
Various artists have contributed to the visual identity of this crossover. Variant covers from Kaare Andrews, Rafael Albuquerque, Alex Ross, and Ron Lim have been revealed, including one where Darth Vader dons the Infinity Gauntlet and another pairing Professor X with Obi-Wan Kenobi, who is seen wearing Cerebro.
At New York Comic Con, the Lucasfilm Publishing panel provided fans with a sneak peek at pages from the series. One page features Vader battling Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and The Thing, among others, suggesting that the series will deliver on its promise of grand scale.
Opeña, a seasoned Marvel artist, previously launched the fifth volume of ‘The Avengers’ with writer Jonathan Hickman in 2013. He has been working in comics full-time since 2005, known for his detailed, cinematic compositions that perfectly suit the epic nature of this artwork.
The Vader and Hulk artwork serves as a reminder of the talented team behind this crossover. With Marquez leading the main series and a rotating cast of cover artists, Marvel is clearly treating this event as a significant milestone. This is encouraging news for fans of both franchises.
Marvel’s efforts to make this crossover a reality reportedly date back over a decade. Smith has mentioned that Lucasfilm turned down crossover requests for years, and he has crafted the story in the style of an MCU film. Earlier rumors suggested Mark Millar as the writer, but that turned out to be incorrect.
Not everyone is on board with the creative direction. Some commentators have expressed doubts about Smith’s suitability as the writer for such a monumental event, while others believe his passion for both franchises is a valuable asset. Regardless, the first issue is set to arrive in January, with new installments released monthly through May.
For now, the artwork provides a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come. A clash between Vader and the Hulk is just one of many exciting pairings in a narrative that spans two of pop culture’s most beloved universes. With the Empire teaming up with Marvel’s most formidable villains, the stakes are undeniably high.
Anticipation will continue to grow throughout the winter months. Whether the story can live up to the grandeur of its visuals remains to be seen, but for many readers, the image of Vader facing off against the Hulk is already worth the price of admission.
