Darth Vader Wields the Infinity Gauntlet in New Art for the ‘Star Wars/Marvel’ Crossover Comic
For years, fans have speculated about the possibilities if the most notorious villains from two of pop culture’s largest universes ever shared a page. Marvel and Lucasfilm are set to answer that question with ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’, marking the first official crossover between the two franchises. This exciting series is set to debut in January 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of ‘Star Wars’.
As the launch date approaches, the publishers have been unveiling cover art that showcases the wild nature of this mash-up. A variety of variant covers have been released by a roster of renowned artists, with one already emerging as a fan favorite.
The latest eye-catching piece is a variant cover by Rafael Albuquerque, featuring Darth Vader donning the Infinity Gauntlet. The artwork is beautifully rendered in cool blues and teals, highlighting Vader’s helmet against a backdrop of tall blue lights. His gauntleted hand is prominently displayed, with the stones glowing in vibrant colors.
This striking visual merges two of the most recognizable symbols in modern fiction. Vader’s silhouette is instantly recognizable, as is the gauntlet. Together, they suggest the immense power that Marvel’s villains could bestow upon the Empire.

Albuquerque is just one of many artists contributing to this project. Kaare Andrews’ cover features Darth Vader wielding his lightsaber alongside Doctor Doom, who is surrounded by electricity, with floating heads of characters from both franchises above them. Alex Ross has provided a photorealistic cover depicting Spider-Man swinging on a web, juxtaposed with Luke Skywalker wielding his lightsaber.
Ron Lim’s cover adopts a more traditional comic-book style, showcasing Professor X and Obi-Wan Kenobi sharing a spacecraft, with a fun twist of Obi-Wan wearing Cerebro. These variants complement a five-part connecting cover by David Marquez, who is also the main artist for the series.
Written by Kevin Smith, a devoted fan of both franchises, the series is set in Marvel’s main continuity, Earth-616. The narrative kicks off when a reality-altering spell causes the events of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ to unfold on Earth, with Marvel’s heroes observing the story as it plays out.
Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewbacca join forces with iconic heroes like Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and the Hulk. On the opposing side, Doctor Doom teams up with Vader and the Galactic Empire, featuring appearances from Thanos and Ultron in the cover art. This five-issue limited series will run from January through May.
Fans have already caught glimpses of the interior art. At New York Comic Con, the Lucasfilm Publishing panel showcased pages that depicted Vader battling Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and The Thing, among others. Additional artwork by Jerome Opeña has illustrated Vader facing off against the Hulk.
These previews indicate a story filled with thrilling, crowd-pleasing confrontations. If Vader is indeed wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, the stakes for Marvel’s heroes will be incredibly high. It remains to be seen whether this cover represents a key plot point or serves merely as an exciting piece of fan service.
The project has a rich history, as Marvel published the first ‘Star Wars’ comic back in April 1977 and resumed publishing the franchise in 2015. Smith has revealed that Lucasfilm had turned down crossover requests for years, and he crafted this story in the style of an MCU movie.
Marvel’s newly appointed editor-in-chief, Stephen Wacker, noted that the two brands have shared intertwined histories for 50 years. While not everyone has embraced the announcement, with some questioning Smith’s selection as writer, the covers have certainly generated considerable excitement.
Cover art like Albuquerque’s achieves precisely what a crossover event should: it ignites readers’ imaginations about the story behind the image. A villain as iconic as Vader, equipped with one of Marvel’s most formidable weapons, is a captivating hook that needs little elaboration. The series has several months to build on that intrigue before its premiere.
With the January launch still a few months away, more reveals are anticipated. For now, this single image has already become one of the standout visuals of the event.
