Marvel has been on a quest to recapture the essence of a true event movie, and this year’s box office results demonstrate just how eager audiences are for such experiences. Following a summer where ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ shattered records, all eyes are now on the franchise’s upcoming major release.

Early ticket sales are providing analysts with valuable insights, and the latest figures from a tracker in Mexico are particularly noteworthy.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set the bar high for the genre, becoming the second-highest-grossing superhero film of all time with approximately $2.45 billion globally, while also achieving a domestic opening weekend record of around $360 million.

This creates a challenging benchmark for any subsequent films, which is why box office analysts are closely monitoring the sales performance of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ in comparison to Spider-Man’s impressive run.

A tracker known as Carlangonz, who shares data on the Box Office Theory forums, recently revealed new presale numbers from Mexico. After a week of regular sales and nearly two weeks of Infinity Vision sales, ‘Doomsday’ has already outperformed the entire sales cycle of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and is nearly 7% ahead of that benchmark.

Additionally, it is approaching 89% of the total opening day sales of ‘Brand New Day’. In this sample, ‘Doomsday’ has achieved nearly 3.5 times the full presale run of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and 3.2 times that of ‘Superman’.

Occupancy rates in the tracker’s sample indicate that 55% of available seats for opening day have been filled. The tracker plans to pause updates for a few weeks, with the next question being whether the film will claim the record for the highest advanced sales ever.

It’s important to note that these figures are from one tracker’s sample rather than official studio data, so they should be interpreted as a strong indication rather than a definitive count.

Mexico is a key market to observe, as the film is set to open there on December 17, a day before its release in the United States. Presales began on September 28, initially limited to theaters certified with Infinity Vision at chains Cinépolis and Cinemex.

In the early hours of sales, some cinema websites and apps experienced technical issues, which speaks volumes about the demand.

Infinity Vision is Disney’s new premium large-format certification, introduced after Warner Bros. secured IMAX screens for ‘Dune: Part Three’ for three weeks during the holiday season. Disney first utilized it for a re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, branded as ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’.

In the United States, the program initially covered 1,000 non-IMAX premium screens. Reports indicate that over 70% of early sales were directed toward Infinity Vision, suggesting the brand is resonating well.

The numbers from the Mexican tracker reflect trends seen in the United States as well. ‘Doomsday’ reportedly garnered $16.5 million in its first 24 hours of premium-format presales, approximately double the first-day figure for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

It later became the first film to exceed $40 million in domestic presales, and trackers have noted its pace is favorable when compared to ‘Brand New Day’. One analysis indicated that ‘Doomsday’ was tracking similarly to ‘Brand New Day’ 12 days prior to its release.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ features a star-studded ensemble, with Robert Downey Jr. portraying the villain Doctor Doom. The cast also includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, and Florence Pugh, among many others.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film has a runtime of 165 minutes, making it longer than ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ but shorter than ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

While presales are just one early indicator, the actual opening day numbers will provide a clearer picture. Nevertheless, a film that reportedly surpasses the entire presale cycle of several recent Marvel hits is certainly noteworthy.

In the coming weeks, more data is expected, and the tracker’s promised update could reveal whether ‘Doomsday’ is indeed on track to break advanced sales records.
