Marvel Studios has just unveiled a new teaser for ‘VisionQuest’, a brief clip released ahead of the October 14 premiere on Disney+. This follows a series of trailers that have gradually revealed more of the plot, including an extended look earlier this month.
The latest teaser emphasizes Ultron’s motives. Reports indicate it confirms that the sentient AI has a far more perilous plan than merely assisting Vision, as Ultron aims to control humans without resorting to violence.
James Spader returns as Ultron for the first time in over a decade. His last significant appearance in the MCU was in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, the same film that introduced Vision, and Ultron initially sought to utilize the body that eventually became Vision’s.
In the series, Spader portrays Ultron as the embodiment of the AI as Vision perceives him in his mindspace. The actor has described this version of the character as much older and wiser than his ‘Age of Ultron’ counterpart, which he compared to a teenager. In the footage, Ultron has also adopted a new appearance, and when E.D.I.T.H. inquires about his chosen look, he responds that it suits him.
Vision has been in hiding after evading those who attempted to weaponize him. During his seclusion, he consults the AI personas embedded in his programming, including J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., and Ultron.
His tranquility is disrupted when a bounty is placed on his head. He goes on the run alongside Thomas Shepherd, a mysterious boy portrayed by Ruaridh Mollica, who may be the reincarnation of Vision’s son.
Paul Bettany stars as Vision, with Spader reprising his role as Ultron. The cast also features Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, and Jonathan Sayer, alongside Emily Hampshire and James D’Arcy.
Executive producers include Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Bettany, Mary Livanos, Matalas, Jac Schaeffer, and Christopher J. Byrne. Directors for the series are Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali, and Matalas.
The show will debut with a two-episode premiere on October 14, with subsequent episodes airing weekly on Wednesdays. Reports regarding the exact release schedule have varied, with the finale anticipated in November.
The premiere was first announced during Disney’s Upfront presentation, and Marvel showcased its initial trailer and poster at D23 in August. Bettany, Spader, and Feige appeared together on stage at the Honda Center in Anaheim for that reveal.
Matalas has noted that the dynamic between Vision and Ultron is a central theme of the series. Spader has mentioned that Ultron harbors both love and hate for Vision, creating a unique blend of tension and intimacy in their relationship.
This relationship also raises a broader question. Since Vision was created using a fragment of Ultron, the series has the opportunity to explore what it means to share DNA with one’s greatest adversary.
‘VisionQuest’ arrives as Marvel redefines its television strategy. ‘Zodiac’ was recently announced for 2028, while ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ concludes next year, and ‘Wonder Man’ was canceled after its premiere season.
Bettany has also expressed confidence that he will appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, although he has not been officially confirmed for either. ‘Doomsday’ is set to release on December 18, suggesting that Vision’s journey may continue beyond this series.
