‘Marshals’ Season 2 Episode 2 Recap & Ending Explained: Cal’s Illness and Kayce’s Concerns for Tate
In the world of ‘Yellowstone’, rescuing someone often leads to new dangers. This week’s ending of ‘Marshals’ illustrates that, as Kayce Dutton retrieves his son but finds that fear has followed him home. It’s a subtler cliffhanger than the series typically presents, leaving a lingering sense of tension.
CBS’s neo-Western made its return on October 4 with the episode titled “All Hat No Cattle,” which resolved Tate’s kidnapping but at a great cost, resulting in Dolly Weaver’s death. Following a successful first season that averaged 19.3 million multiplatform viewers per episode, ‘Marshals’ became the number one new show of the year. With a 20-episode season ahead, the writers have ample opportunity to explore the aftermath.
The latest episode, “End of Watch,” aired on October 11 and shifts the focus back to case-of-the-week scenarios. While the manhunt concludes within the hour, the real story lies in what the team brings back home: Cal finally opens up to his colleagues about his illness, while Kayce continues fortifying East Camp to ensure Tate’s safety.
The episode kicks off with a sniper taking down a man casually walking near Butte Reservoir. The Marshals are tasked with capturing Wayne Plummer, a former SWAT officer wanted for manufacturing and selling homemade suppressors. When Belle encounters a pressure-triggered bomb in Wayne’s house, Kayce guides her through disarming it.
A manifesto uncovers Wayne’s true intentions. He was dismissed from multiple law enforcement jobs and seeks revenge on those he holds responsible. By the time Kayce and Andrea arrive, a deputy who had filed a complaint against Wayne is already dead.
The team realizes that many names on Wayne’s list will be present at the dignified transfer for the deceased deputy at the coroner’s office. Harry Gifford survives a gunshot thanks to his vest, and Belle deduces that two shooters are involved: Wayne in a top-floor window and his son on the roof. Wayne refuses to surrender and is killed, while his son eventually gives up.
Kayce reassures the young man that loyalty to family is commendable, urging him to remember his father’s legacy rather than his own actions. This moment shifts the focus from the crime to Kayce’s personal journey. Later, Cal discovers that Harry had fired Wayne from the highway patrol 18 years ago and had kept Wayne’s son from passing the academy.

By the episode’s conclusion, Cal reveals to the team that he has a rare form of lung cancer, assuring them it won’t interfere with his work. His doctor recommends chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, while Belle encourages him to adhere to the treatment plan and inform everyone. Andrea reassures him that the team supports him, and Kayce offers his assistance.
Cal’s revelation remains incomplete, as he has yet to tell his daughter, Maddie. Meanwhile, Miles exploits this secret to escape desk duty. Belle is also facing challenges at home, as her son Braxton struggles to sleep without her presence.
The emotional core of the episode revolves around Kayce and Tate. When Andrea questions whether Kayce is constructing a fortress, he responds that he will do whatever is necessary to protect Tate. He even hears Tate calling out when no one else does. Additionally, Tom Weaver is denied permission to attend his daughter’s funeral, prompting Andrea to suggest that Kayce should seek closure.
At John Dutton’s grave, Tate tells his father he no longer requires rescuing. He acknowledges Weaver’s threat but still views his grandfather as a good man, which deeply concerns Kayce. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut has hinted at this tension, explaining to TVLine that Tate is “knocking on the door of becoming a Dutton man,” a notion that is somewhat frightening for Kayce.
Hudnut also mentioned to TheWrap that Kayce fears Tate may “try to follow in his footsteps.” This episode solidifies that fear, with Wayne’s son reflecting the future Kayce dreads.

Kayce confides in Rainwater about his fears that Tate may become like him, believing that no Dutton man should emulate his father. Rainwater reassures him that this worry indicates Kayce is not like John, though no one can guarantee that Tate will escape the turmoil surrounding him. This exchange offers a modest sense of comfort, and the episode concludes on that note.
Critics have generally praised this episode for intertwining its case with Kayce’s family trauma. The overarching theme is that the Dutton legacy poses the true threat this season, and no rescue can completely overcome it. Meanwhile, Rainwater faces his own challenges, grappling with increasing political pressure and backlash regarding his leadership on the reservation.
The next episode, “Falling Sky,” is set to air on Sunday, October 18, featuring a military drone explosion and escalating tensions at Broken Rock. With the season running through May 2027, there’s ample opportunity for Cal’s illness and Tate’s decisions to intersect.
