A striking red carpet duo, Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro showcased a captivating contrast at the London Film Festival. Garfield opted for rich, earthy tones, while Barbaro dazzled in shimmering ice-blue sequins, creating one of the most photographed moments of the event. This premiere also marked a celebratory moment for a film that has navigated a tumultuous journey.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino, ‘Artificial‘ chronicles the dramatic events surrounding OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s firing and reinstatement in 2023, spanning over two decades. Initially released by Amazon MGM Studios in June, the film was later rescued by Neon after other distributors declined. It made its debut at the New York Film Festival on October 5 before crossing the Atlantic for its UK premiere.

On Sunday, October 11, Garfield and Barbaro graced the Royal Festival Hall for the film’s gala screening at the 70th BFI London Film Festival. They posed for photographers alongside Guadagnino, Yura Borisov, Ike Barinholtz, and Mark Rylance, marking the first time the cast of this Oscar-hopeful drama appeared together in London.

Garfield embraced a relaxed yet tailored look in warm olive and brown shades. He sported a textured khaki-green blazer over an olive shirt, paired with dark trousers and black leather loafers. His tousled, longer hair added to the confident yet easygoing vibe, steering clear of the typical formal premiere stiffness.

In contrast, Barbaro opted for a stunning ice-blue sequin midi dress with thin straps and a ruffled hem, complemented by shimmering strappy heels and loose, wavy hair. The metallic fabric sparkled under the lights of the red carpet, while the ruffled hem added a playful touch to her ensemble.

Their contrasting looks harmonized beautifully without mirroring each other. The pair has a history of coordinating outfits, having donned matching Ralph Lauren whites at Wimbledon in both 2025 and 2026. This time, the contrast proved to be even more effective.

Garfield is no stranger to memorable appearances at the London Film Festival. At a previous premiere of ‘We Live in Time,’ he famously brought a cardboard cutout of co-star Florence Pugh, who was unable to attend. He has also returned for ‘After the Hunt,’ another film by Guadagnino.

This year, the atmosphere was polished yet relaxed. Garfield and Barbaro were first linked in February 2025 after attending a play in London, and they are now widely reported to be a couple. Garfield has expressed admiration for Barbaro’s talent while promoting the film.

Their red carpet appearance also included insightful comments about the film. Garfield, portraying Altman, shared with Variety, “I’m still deeply curious about Sam, he’s unfolding before our eyes as we speak and it’s kind of endlessly fascinating, like AI itself I guess.” He noted that he did not meet or contact Altman during his preparation.

Garfield expressed that curiosity and fear drew him to the story, as he aimed to comprehend the individuals guiding the world into its next phase. His previous role in ‘The Social Network,’ the 2010 film about Facebook’s origins, adds a fitting resonance to this project. Barbaro plays Mira Murati, OpenAI’s former technology chief.

The film is set to hit US theaters on Christmas Day through Neon, with UK and Irish audiences able to catch it on January 22, 2027. Early reactions from the London gala have already ignited Oscar buzz for Garfield. For Barbaro, this marks her third release of 2026, following ‘Crime 101’ and ‘One Night Only.’

As the awards season heats up, expect to see this dynamic duo gracing more red carpets. If the enthusiastic response at the Royal Festival Hall is any indication, ‘Artificial’ has captured the attention of its audience.
