‘Silo’ Author Hugh Howey Calls ‘Dark Matter’ the Best Show on Air Right Now
Science fiction has always fostered a strong sense of community, with creators often supporting one another publicly. This spirit of generosity contributes to the genre’s welcoming atmosphere. Recently, one of its most prominent authors demonstrated this camaraderie with a significant compliment.
Hugh Howey, the author behind the ‘Silo’ novels that inspired Apple TV’s acclaimed series, recently shared his thoughts on another show from the same platform. The third season of ‘Silo’ has adapted events from the second and third books, including a major flashback storyline that introduces new characters. As the franchise approaches its conclusion, Howey’s comments carry particular weight.
Taking to Threads, Howey praised ‘Dark Matter’, declaring it the best show currently airing. His enthusiastic response came in reply to a post encouraging viewers to catch up on the series, showcasing his support for a fellow hit on Apple TV.
Based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel, ‘Dark Matter’ features Crouch as the creator, showrunner, and writer. Joel Edgerton stars as Jason Dessen, a physicist living a comfortable life in Chicago with his wife, Daniela, played by Jennifer Connelly, and their son. Jason often wonders how his life might have been different, only to discover the answer in the most harrowing way.
The cast also includes Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, and Amanda Brugel. The first season premiered on May 8, 2024, consisting of nine episodes and achieving an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences. Following the first season finale, Apple quickly renewed the series for a second season.

Season two debuted on August 28, 2026, two years after the first season, featuring 10 episodes—one more than the initial season—with new episodes releasing every Friday until the finale on October 30. Episode 8 is set to air on October 16, followed by episode 9 on October 23.
Since the first season covered the novel’s plot, the second season had to forge its own path. Apple’s description indicates that the Dessens settle into a seemingly safe life until unforeseen circumstances force them to flee once more. Jason’s obsession with the Box intensifies, while Daniela’s growing paranoia threatens their fragile stability.
Crouch co-wrote every episode alongside Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry. One review rated the season a B+, noting that while it occasionally gets lost in its intricate narrative, it remains anchored by Edgerton, Connelly, and the deeply human emotions they portray. The fifth episode, which follows another version of Jason left behind after aiding the Dessens’ escape, was highlighted for its emotional depth.
Interestingly, the first two episodes of ‘Dark Matter’ season two coincided with the penultimate and finale episodes of ‘Silo’ season three. Reports indicate that ‘Dark Matter’ currently ranks third worldwide among Apple TV titles, just ahead of ‘Silo’ in fourth place. In the U.S., they rank fourth and sixth, respectively.
For a long time, ‘Dark Matter’ was viewed as the underdog within Apple’s sci-fi lineup, often overshadowed by larger names like ‘Foundation’ and ‘Silo.’ However, it has cultivated a dedicated following by prioritizing character development and tension over spectacle. Howey’s endorsement could potentially attract even more viewers to the series.

Endorsements from fellow storytellers carry significant weight, particularly when they come from someone whose work is a flagship series on the same platform. This reflects how Apple has cultivated a reputation for cerebral, character-driven science fiction. Both ‘Silo’ and ‘Dark Matter’ delve into profound themes through intimate stakes.
