‘Line of Fire’ Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: Jane’s Confession Reveals Hollingsworth Secrets
Every family has its secrets, but the Hollingsworths take it to another level with their training. NBC’s ‘Line of Fire’ has been showcasing how a household filled with Secret Service agents, FBI investigators, and U.S. Marshals is also a place where unspoken truths linger. This week’s closing scene exemplifies that tension.
Created by Joshua Safran, the series premiered to 8.6 million viewers, marking a 48% rise compared to the network’s previous Monday slot. Since the debut, a killer leaving origami cranes has been stalking the family, while Homeland Security Detective Nia Wallace is hot on the trail. Last week, it was revealed that Mike’s son Jack, who was believed to be dead for five years, is actually alive and living under the alias “David.”
The suspense reaches its peak in the final moments of “Paper Trails.” Jane finally decides to come clean and reveals to Nia the truth about her stepson. Five years ago, after serving six years as a Navy SEAL, Jack was given an undercover assignment that required him to fake his own death.
The week’s case kicks off when a package bomb explodes at the Secretary of Agriculture’s home just a day before his daughter Abby’s wedding. Fortunately, no one is harmed. Jane brings Clare into the investigation, but Mike shows up with the Secret Service, leading to a clash between father and daughter over how to handle the case.
Investigators follow red ink threat letters to Hank Baxter, the family’s retired lawyer. Although bomb-making materials are found in his storage unit, Clare suspects that his fingerprints indicate panic rather than guilt. Her instincts prove correct.
Hank walks into a Secret Service sting with a gift-wrapped bomb that lacks a detonator, resulting in him being shot. Clare continues to dig and discovers that Hank wasn’t a drunk but was actually showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Mike’s laid-back demeanor helps get the Keanes talking when Clare’s direct approach fails.
The real culprit turns out to be the Secretary’s wife, Meredith Keane. She sent the threats and led Hank to his demise, fearing that his declining mind posed a risk to a long-buried secret: the couple took Abby from their housekeeper years ago, with Hank’s assistance. Meredith is arrested for his murder.
Meanwhile, Micah is tasked with guarding the president’s daughter, Sydney, when he inadvertently consumes water laced with ecstasy. His family rushes to sober him up before his shift ends, while Nia arrives to question him as a person of interest. This situation leads to a long-overdue confrontation between Micah and Russ about their lack of communication.
A review from So There’s That interprets Jack’s presumed death as the source of these familial rifts: Clare turned to her mother, Micah to his father, while Russ was left to fend for himself. This quieter thread runs through the episode and sets the stage for Jane’s next move.

The Keanes deceived their daughter “in the name of love,” a sentiment Clare echoes later without realizing it reflects her own family dynamics. Mike and Jane debate whether to disclose the truth to their kids, with Jane fearing they may never forgive the deception. By confiding in Nia, Jane opts to protect her children by sharing the truth with someone outside the family.
Jane’s narrative is also carefully crafted. She informs Nia that a CIA contact believes Jack died during his mission within the last two years and that someone familiar with him is taunting the family with the cranes. Viewers are aware of the real situation, raising the question of whether Jane is misleading Nia or genuinely unaware of the truth. Either scenario is unsettling.

The stakes are high. By turning over cranes taken from crime scenes, Jane risks triggering an internal investigation and potential criminal charges. Meanwhile, Jack is quietly gathering intelligence on Nia and her task force, even breaking into the precinct. Her agreement with Nia is straightforward: she will answer any questions if Nia keeps her kids out of it.
Don’t expect neat resolutions anytime soon. Safran, in an interview with TV Insider, mentioned that the writers are still developing future episodes and that “we’re still dealing with stuff regarding Logan.” The next episode is set to air on October 19.
