‘Breaking Bad’ Star RJ Mitte’s Cause of Death Confirmed as Co-Stars and Fans Mourn
Few supporting characters on television carried as much quiet weight as Walter White Jr. In ‘Breaking Bad’, the teenager known as Flynn spent years at the edge of his father’s criminal empire, leaning on his crutches and eating breakfast while the adults around him unraveled. The actor who brought that warmth to life, RJ Mitte, is now being remembered by fans and former colleagues worldwide.
Created by Vince Gilligan, Walt Jr. is the son of Walter and Skyler White, and he has cerebral palsy. Mitte lived with the same condition, though his own case was milder, and he appeared in 56 episodes across all 5 seasons of the series. For many viewers, it was a rare instance of a disabled character portrayed by an actor who understood the experience firsthand.
On Monday, October 12, a county official confirmed to TMZ that Mitte had died in Texas at the age of 34. The cause of death has now been publicly addressed, with details shared with the sensitivity this story deserves.
His representatives confirmed that he died by suicide in Brownsville, Texas. The Associated Press reported that Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa declared him dead around 1:30 p.m. local time, and an autopsy is set to be performed. Law enforcement has stated that the death investigation is ongoing.
His representatives, speaking to TMZ, described him as a “beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate.” They noted that he used his own experience with cerebral palsy to bring authenticity to the role and to promote disability awareness and inclusion.
Mitte’s influence extended well beyond one television family. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and was the president of The Mitte Foundation. This family charity, based in Austin, funds community projects in South Texas, including the Mitte Cultural District in Brownsville.
Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age 3, he wore leg braces and used crutches for much of his childhood. He transformed that experience into a public message advocating for representation. Earlier this year, he spoke at an Axios event about the negative impact of inaccurate or one-dimensional portrayals of people with disabilities.
Mitte’s recent appearances indicated an actor still deeply connected to the show that made him famous. He had recently appeared on a podcast to revisit ‘Breaking Bad’ and share his thoughts on what happened to the White family after the series concluded. He also addressed fan theories regarding Walter’s children eventually receiving his money.
He had also spent time with former co-star Luis Moncada. In October 2025, he announced his engagement to Kennedy Suarez, sharing with People at the time the happiness he found in the relationship. This makes the news of his passing especially difficult for fans who followed his life after the show.
He was actively working at the time of his death, with several projects in pre-production and production, and was promoting his new movie, ‘Talking to Strangers’.

The reaction from his former colleagues has been swift. ‘Breaking Bad’ co-stars have begun sharing their heartbreak, while fans are revisiting scenes of Walt Jr. that resonate differently now. The character often served as the show’s emotional anchor, and Mitte portrayed him with a sincerity that audiences will never forget.
His legacy encompasses both his on-screen work and his off-screen advocacy. He played a significant role in advancing the conversation about disabled performers, and those who continue his advocacy are now carrying that message forward in his memory.
