Lena Dunham Revives ‘Girls’ at HBO with Most of the Original Cast Returning
Few shows shaped a decade of television dialogue like ‘Girls’. It sparked debates, launched careers, and made a generation discuss Hannah Horvath over brunch. Nearly 10 years after its finale, the voice of a generation is set for another chapter.
On Tuesday, HBO announced the revival of ‘Girls’ for a limited series consisting of 5 episodes. Creator and star Lena Dunham will return, joined by Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells, with production slated to begin in 2027. This revival marks a decade since the sixth and final season concluded.
This announcement is a significant turnaround. In 2022, HBO stated there were no plans to bring the series back, and Dunham mentioned that the timing wasn’t right. Now, both parties have shifted their stance, and the show that aired from 2012 to 2017 is returning for a focused revival.
Dunham will reprise her role as Hannah Horvath, the aspiring writer central to the narrative. Williams will portray Marnie Michaels, Kirke will play Jessa Johansson, Mamet will take on Shoshanna Shapiro, and Rannells will return as Elijah Krantz. According to Variety, all four core cast members are back.
Judd Apatow, who executive produced the original series, is also returning, alongside Dunham, Ilene S. Landress, and Michael P. Cohen from Dunham’s Good Thing Going banner. Williams, Kirke, Mamet, and Rannells will serve as co-executive producers, with Dunham writing and directing the new episodes.
However, two notable figures are missing from the announcement. Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s on-and-off boyfriend, is not listed among the returning cast. Additionally, Jenni Konner, the original series’ co-showrunner and executive producer, was not mentioned in the press release, and Deadline reported that she will not be returning.
Both individuals were discussed in Dunham’s memoir, ‘Famesick’, published in April, which has sparked speculation about their absence. Neither has been directly addressed in the announcement. For now, the focus remains on the core group.

In a statement, Dunham shared that the group always agreed to return only if there was a compelling story to tell. She expressed that she missed the characters, but for a long time, she couldn’t envision them in the present. Then, around her 40th birthday, the characters began to speak to her, and once they do, it’s hard to silence them.
She described the opportunity to revisit something that transformed her life as rare, offering a new perspective and a deeper appreciation. Dunham expressed her love for these characters, their friends at HBO, and everyone who continues to discover the show. Her closing remarks promised joy in reuniting and, humorously, the chance to wear yellow mesh.
HBO’s comedy chief, Amy Gravitt, expressed excitement about Dunham shifting her focus from the chaos of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning 40. This suggests the revival will not merely revisit the original premise but will explore characters at a different life stage.
The original series followed Hannah and her friends as she navigated her twenties in New York, dealing with tumultuous relationships, fluctuating careers, and significant self-discovery. A revival that examines these characters in midlife presents a natural contrast and allows the show to reflect on how both its characters and audience have evolved.
The cast appeared in a brief teaser announcing the reunion, technically portraying themselves but embodying their characters’ essence. In it, Dunham checks to see if everyone is willing to return, providing a playful introduction that hints at the tone of the upcoming episodes.

Currently, there is no premiere date, and HBO has not disclosed when the new episodes will air. All six seasons of the original series are available for streaming on HBO Max, providing newcomers and longtime fans a chance to catch up before the revival arrives. With filming not set to begin until 2027, the wait will be lengthy.
