The role of Batman in the DCU has sparked significant discussion among fans, with many speculating about casting and which version of the Dark Knight should debut first. Recently, James Gunn’s comments have added a new dimension to this ongoing conversation.

The concept of ‘Batman Beyond’ has been in the works at Warner Bros. for over 20 years. Originally launched as an animated series in 1999, it has been considered for live-action adaptations multiple times, often with Michael Keaton’s name appearing in fan discussions and rumors. However, none of these attempts have come to fruition.

Now, Gunn has reignited interest in the idea. During an interview with ¡HOLA! USA at the ‘Clayface’ premiere, the co-CEO of DC Studios expressed his enthusiasm for ‘Batman Beyond’, describing it as a promising project for the future. He noted that since it originated in animation, it could translate well into a movie, although he did not provide any specific details regarding a project or timeline.

Created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett, the animated series debuted as a futuristic sequel to ‘Batman: The Animated Series’. It follows Terry McGinnis, a young man who takes on the Batman mantle after an aging Bruce Wayne retires. The dynamic between Terry and Bruce, as mentor and protĂ©gĂ©, forms the core of the show.

This structure makes ‘Batman Beyond’ an attractive option for a shared universe, as it presents a self-contained story without needing to revisit an origin that audiences are already familiar with.

Attempts at live-action adaptations have been made in the past. In 2000, Boaz Yakin was set to co-write and direct a ‘Batman Beyond’ film, but it never came to pass. Later, there were rumors about a project featuring Michael Keaton as an older Bruce Wayne, which fans were excited about due to his iconic roles in the 1989 ‘Batman’ and 1992 ‘Batman Returns’.

Recently, journalist Jeff Sneider reported that a solo Batman film starring Keaton, written by Christina Hodson, was shelved after Gunn and Safran took charge of DC. TheWrap’s Umberto Gonzalez indicated that this project was, in fact, the ‘Batman Beyond’ film. However, these reports have not been confirmed by DC Studios.

Currently, the studio’s plans for Batman are directed elsewhere. ‘The Brave and the Bold’, announced in 2023 and helmed by Andy Muschietti, aims to introduce the DCU’s Batman, focusing on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian, along with the broader Bat-family. No casting decisions have been made yet, and this version of Batman is intended to exist separately from Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ films.

Additionally, ‘Clayface’ will reshape Gotham’s portrayal in the DCU. The film is set before ‘Creature Commandos’ season 1, meaning Batman is already active in the timeline, but he does not appear in the film. Instead, the story centers on a villain to introduce Gotham, with director James Watkins noting that the influence of the Bat is inherently felt in a city named Gotham.

Gunn’s comments came during a significant premiere night for the studio. He also confirmed that Clayface will return in a future DCU project, while Peter Safran mentioned that the script for ‘Swamp Thing’ is currently being developed. ‘Clayface’ is set to hit theaters on October 23, and early reviews have praised its intense horror elements.

While a ‘Batman Beyond’ movie remains an idea rather than a confirmed project, Gunn’s enthusiasm for the property has reignited fan interest after years of speculation.
